Much like most of you I am beside myself with grief regarding the latest Supreme Court decision. We all know how this will turn out and the bottom line is that unless you are a 1%er with a large disposable income, your limited influence in politics and policy just got a bat to the groin.
As such, I think it may be time to start really thinking and discussing the option of publicly financed election to rid our current system of the undue influence of plutocratic money. The unfortunate thing is I don't know much in the way of proposals or organizations that are taking on this important issue. So, I would like more knowledgeable DUer's to provide any information they may have on this most important issue. A sort of information clearinghouse thread if you will. If you know organizations that are working on this let us know. If you know of specific proposals put it in the thread. But most of all let us come together and discuss and debate what those changes need to be and then work together to get it done.
Frustrated but not Finished,
B

(600 posts)Is the solution an amendment? Are there other less demanding ways to ensure that the SC would be less likely to get involved? I admit that I am just looking for solutions to a complicated problem but have no answers.

(11,804 posts)The sad thing is that the money as you pour into house races may not be as much of a factor as the fact that the representatives district was cut specifically to make a safe republican or democrat seat.
It's been a few years since i read Bushwhacked by Molly Ivans (listened to actually, book on cd) - but I remember her talking about how some states had made strides on these issues (but most hadn't of course).

(7,820 posts)Going to be looking more into the hows and whos myself. There is at least one group working towards public financing in CA. I get their newsletters, but time to get more active.

(22,271 posts)how are you going to get Congress, who are direct beneficiaries of the current corrupt system, to enact this legislation?
If this goes like the last 2,106,562 times, I'm guessing ***crickets***

(600 posts)but isn't part of the reason we are here is to change that or should we just accept that meaningful change is impossible? It may be an exercise in tilting at windmills but I would prefer to try something as opposed to nothing.

(22,271 posts)HOW do "we" go about changing it? There is no national referendum system. Now, if the Democrats want to include that in their 2014 platform, it would be a starting place. But they're not going to do that because they benefit from the current system.
