Republican rule by a thousand oligarchs

It seems to me that today's ruling in McCutcheon means that a thousand donors can get the Republicans well over the $1 billion mark.

The individual contribution limits are still in place, so that's $2600 per person for each federal candidate for each election cycle. The aggregate limits are now finished because of the Right's newfound love for First Amendment freedoms.

There are 435 House candidates and 33 Senate candidates each cycle, so 468 total for each party. If one contributor gives those 468 the maximum individual limit of $2,600 to each candidate, that's $1.216 million.

If 1,000 oligarchs give $1.216 million to each Republican candidate that's $1.216 billion. In 2012 total spending on all House and Senate races for all parties combined was about $1.8 billion. Assuming that 60% of that spending was for Republican candidates, Republican spending would be about $1.1 billion. Those 1,000 oligarchs could contribute more than all Republican federal campaign spending in 2012.

But, hey, that could not possibly be corruption, could it? I mean, what could go wrong?
