Mayor Rob Ford was the lone member of council to vote Wednesday afternoon against finding a Toronto street to dedicate to Nelson Mandela. He was also the lone vote against a proposal to congratulate Canadas Olympians.
Both proposals carried 40-1. Ford did not explain his opposition to either of them.
He rose later in the afternoon to say he had mistakenly voted the wrong way on both issues, and he asked council to allow the matters to be reopened so he could change his vote. Council did not immediately agree, and some councillors were skeptical of Fords claim that he had made an honest error.
Dont buy it for a second, Councillor Josh Matlow told reporters. Ford, he said, regularly votes based on disdain, sometimes out of personal antipathy to the councillor who put forth the motion in question.
