In his Kremlin defense of Russias annexation of Crimea, Vladimir Putin, even before he began listing the battles where Russian blood had been shed on Crimean soil, spoke of an older deeper bond.
Crimea, said Putin, is the location of ancient Khersones, where Prince Vladimir was baptized. His spiritual feat of adopting Orthodoxy predetermined the overall basis of the culture, civilization and human values that unite the peoples of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.
Russia is a Christian country, Putin was saying. This speech recalls last Decembers address where the former KGB chief spoke of Russia as standing against a decadent West:
Many Euro-Atlantic countries have moved away from their roots, including Christian values. Policies are being pursued that place on the same level a multi-child family and a same-sex partnership, a faith in God and a belief in Satan. This is the path to degradation.
Heard any Western leader, say, Barack Obama, talk like that lately?

(22,871 posts)There's a lot of pining for the good old days of white Christian absolute power in the western world. Putin sends those dog whistles out and Christian white power groups pick it up. He's a dangerous man playing a dangerous game and America's right wing extremists are cheering him on.

(32,886 posts)That's really what most right wingers want. They want the 1950s back. And Putin and Russia seem to suggest 1950s America to them.
Not sure I disagree. I think equality and social justice wise, Russia is about where the US was in 1950, except I don't see any 1960s movement in the near future for them.

(9,893 posts)but white Christian MALE absolute power.
My experiences with former Soviets convinced me that the USSR is stuck not in the 1950s, but in the 1850s as far as its view of women.

(16,191 posts)The original population and settlers of Crimea were Greek, and the native Greek population controlled the peninsula for a millennia. Price Vladimir lead the Kievan Rus, and was baptized in Khersones after he conquered the Crimean people and its native population (the Tatars didn't appear and settle in Crimea until the Mongols defeated the area centuries later, and the peninsula retained its Greek population until the Russians forcibly ejected them in the 1700's).
The Kievan Rus were the ancestors of the modern Russian, Ukrainian, and Belorussian states. The fact that a Rus king from Kiev conquered Crimea does not somehow give Russia any greater claim to it than Ukraine had. That's like saying that a person has the right to steal something from a sibling, if they can prove that it once belonged to their parent.
It's an idiotic argument.

This piece convinces me that Pat is in the middle stages of senile dementia, and that his family and friends should stage an intervention.
