It isn't signed. It isn't handwritten. Unless it was personally handed to the teacher, there isn't any way to identify the person who wrote it.

They probably don't hate the class so much...s/he used the correct form of "you're", so somewhere along the line, the class was listening! I just think this is a severe case of "senioritis". My kids at school are already infected and ready to GO.

I wouldn't doubt for a minute this is real. You'd be amazed at how many kids don't put their names on papers they're handing in for credit. The cloud of anonymity makes the comments/language almost expected. Kids today use profanity like you & I breathe. I'll also be willing to bet this was one of the "tougher" kids in class, who may have given her a hard time, but deep inside really liked her. The kids I spend all year butting heads with are ALWAYS the ones who come back to visit.

Your comment about college is right on the money...I just read an article to my classes about how colleges are now looking at tweets, facebook postings, etc. to get a better "feel" for the student, and it's causing colleges to rescind acceptances.

You would not believe the rude, anti-intellectual students of today's classroom. I had a student who was 19, couldn't pass the high school exit exam, was always insulting me and tried to sleep through my final. I had to send him to the principal so he could write his essay on Japanese internment and finally get out of my class after failing it 3 quarters straight. The issue was he wanted to stay on campus because he was a big fish in a little pond but was also dragging other kids down.

These students do exist and there are more of them. There was one really rude student who every teacher had issues with and she would never constantly on her cell phone in class. She was finally kicked out but not before writing "Fuck you" to me on her folder. Of course most students are fine but the rude ones are getting worse.

Some want any non-proper-noun word that follows a colon to be lowercase; some say that if what follows a colon could stand on its own as a complete sentence (or, for the Chicago Manual of Style, if it's two or more sentences), it should be capitalized as if it were a complete sentence.

Being a teacher in the city, this doesn't surprise me at all. Students are becoming more resistant to reading literature and writing. They also have no social skills and some students will say to me they really like my teaching but that I give too much work and am "not fair."
This is their way of saying they want to slide through the class without doing any work.

More education correlates with higher pay. It's not a 1.00 correlation, but still pretty good.

More education correlates with better health.

More education correlates with greater social trust and cohesion.

More education correlates with lower criminality.

More education correlates with less poverty--even at the same payscale, more education means better fiscal health.

More education correlates with having kids who are more educated. Therefore, on average, wealthier, healthier, and spending less time in jail. (Not every parent's goal, I guess--having wealthier, healthier kids not in jail. To each his own.)

It's not just all about $.

More education also tends to correlate with longer time-horizons for planning purposes. So most of those college grads making minimum wage will see greater, faster advancement in their work than those who have a high-school degree, however impatient they are now. Even now, college grads making minimum wage have a far lower unemployment rate than people with just a high-school degree. (And let's not even talk high-school drop outs.)

ninties--but not now. The two girls that live next to me are case in point. One graduated two years ago from UCLA with a major in French and a minor in History. The second graduated from UCSB with a major in Political Science. One is working waiting tables, the other as a bar maid. Neither has any job prospects. And once they get to the 3-year mark--they won't. Could this be an unusual case? Sure. But I saw this stuff every day when I was working HR for a travel agency. I got my daughter a good job for a well-know company and she didn't even have a degree. Know how? I paid an employment counselor. And that's the way it is.

The UCLA girl may do all right because of the name UCLA. Very prestigious college. I wish I would have gone there rather than UCLB. I feel badly for both girls, but I am now instructing young people to consider going into trade training program--high priced ones if they can afford it. A whole different world.

I have one friend who was insulted and mocked all year long by a math teacher who never liked him. She gave him C's and D's. Three years later he took calculus in college and earned an A. During Christmas break, he trekked back up to his old high school, with a copy of his college transcripts and his calculus A-grade highlighted. He scribbled a note on his transcript copy: "I guess it all just depends on the quality of the teacher", and placed it in his old high school teacher's campus mailbox.
