Burning them alive wasn't the worst. By the time he got around to that they were toothless and missing their fingernails and had their shoulders and hips dislocated by the torturers who operated with his blessing.
He was an evil man whose good attributes didn't extend farther than his family.
He, like the modern theocrats, worshiped the god of assisted living, meaning he had to do god's work on earth because god himself was incapable of it.

edit: Actually, Pope John Paul II did give an implicit endorsement of torture.
