Just returning from a staff infection that cost me my foot. Have been off grid for over a month. But little has changed as I return.
It is so sad to see that our present paranoia about raising taxes on anyone for anything continues unabated. In Oklahoma there is a kerfuffle about building much needed shelters in schools after all the recent tornado damage. They won't even raise taxes to protect their children. The statement that a ballot initiative to build shelters in Oklahoma will fail because it raises taxes if just unbelievable. I simply cannot understand why we are so tax terrified now. Something else has to be cut if we have to use money for disaster. This zero sum mentality that we are caught in lessens the economic and over all health of our nation.
We are all in this together yet we have forgotten that reality. We all sink or swim together. We must understand that our challenges are not about being Republican or Democrat. Mother nature does not care anything about your political believes. Mother natures wrath takes its toll on all sides of the political spectrum. As far as I am concerned we settle our differences and start bailing together or we all sink.
Somehow being off grid during my own personal challenge was kind of a blessing. Sure enough there is good news but there is far too little of it.

ETA: Sorry to hear about your foot. I hope you will be able to adapt to whatever prosthesis is appropriate for your situation.

And you're right about taxes. Corporations MUST pay more taxes. They're the ones that have been getting away with paying less and less and less, shipping jobs overseas, and still making huge demands on our nation's infrastructure.

(47,953 posts)The average person is living paycheck to paycheck, so of course they don't want to pay more in taxes. But they are brainwashed into believing any tax increase will fall on them, rather than being targeted to the few who do have lots of extra profits. And of course the reverse is true, they believe tax cuts will help them, but they only help the rich.

(10,602 posts)When Reagan revealed his plan for a "service economy" it was a code signal for employers that they could reduce wages. Amnesty, union busting, wage stagnation policies, and even outsourcing and free trade has been an strategy to reduce wages in the long term.
What was little recognized by the public was that the GOP had a sinister strategy was to reduce most of the workforce to paycheck to paycheck desperation with little money left for extras. Such an idea allowed the GOP to make taxes unpopular and unsustainable. Plus giving the money to the top and reducing their taxes would starve government.

As to what you said, I blame this mentality on the MBA programs and the conservative revolution and the religion of Mamom
