During an April 3 Senate subcommittee meeting on the Drug Enforcement Administrations budget, Michele Leonhart, the head of the DEA, reaffirmed her commitment to stopping the movement for legal marijuana from going any furtherand her commitment to using any excuse she can possibly find to justify her agency's existence.
Leonhart has previously trashed her boss Barack Obama for letting Colorado and Washington state proceed with selling pot for recreational purposes. She also took issue with Obamas line about pot being no worse than alcohol (an accurate thing to say, though it rings hypocritical given the ongoing war on drugs his administration is fighting).
But at last weeks hearing, Leonhart upped her game and verbally wrung her hands about an odd victim of the war on drugs: dogs. Yes, as USA Today cautioned in March, dogs can get sick and even die if they consume marijuana edibles. Dogs can also die from eating chocolate or getting hit by cars or getting shot by police officers, yet we never hear any noise about banning those things. Leonharts wont-someone-PLEASE-think-of-the-fluffy-puppies plea makes it seem as if she truly is running on empty, argument-wise.
But shes not done, nor is the rest of the DEA. Leonart and her agents were not disheartened by the legalization of weed in Colorado and Washington state. Actually, it makes us fight harder, she said at the hearing, before fretting that parents would be teaching their teens that pot isnt so bad.

(2,186 posts)The costly war on drugs has been an abject failure that's cost many lives, corrupted our Law Enforcement Agencies, torn apart families.
End the war on drugs now and spend the money elsewhere, like rebuilding our inner cities, the nations infrastructure, rebuild our crumbling education system.
Here's an idea, why not abolish the DEA, retrain the agents to go after the crooked banksters and Wall Street criminals?
At least let's get some bang for the tax payers bucks.

(62,325 posts)that is a great idea. We got nothing for all the billions spent on the Drug War, just more orphaned children, loss of Constitutional Rights, promotion of the Private Prison Industry, corruption, lies, cheating by local PDs and the outrageous prison sentences, mostly of minorities for petty possession charges.
I can't think of a single positive outcome of the so-called war on drugs.
If 'think of the dogs' is all they can come up with now, it's time to disband them and give the money to the many underfunded Animal Shelters who are far more experienced at taking care of dogs in need.

(90,061 posts)How does going to jail for a long time fix your drug problem? Anybody's drug problem?
It is well shown that harm reduction works better, and is much cheaper, and does not help to keep drug gangs in business.
