http://www.salon.com/2014/04/08/morning_joes_special_privileges_why_is_msnbc_allowing_him_to_help_gop_raise_money/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=socialflowJoe Scarborough, who is definitely not running for president, is going to New Hampshire next month to deliver the keynote address at the Chesire County Republican Lincoln Day Dinner. This follows another visit to New Hampshire last month, where Scarborough delivered a speech to the Northeast Republican Leadership Conference. Joe Scarborough would like you to know that he is not planning a run for president he just happens to enjoy New Hampshire, I guess, and who doesnt? (He also recently visited South Carolina.) But as the Huffington Posts Michael Calderone reports, this totally normal not-at-all presidential campaign-related New Hampshire visit probably violates MSNBC policy on hosts raising money for political parties or candidates. Because it is a fundraiser.
Maybe it doesnt make a ton of sense to allow hosts to advocate, on-air, for certain parties and candidates, but not to donate to or raise money for them, but those are the rules, and those rules are what got then-MSNBC host Keith Olbermann suspended in 2010, after Olbermann donated money to three Democratic candidates.
(snip)
This year, MSNBC forced liberal host Ed Schultz to withdraw from a Democratic Party fundraiser. This will be Scarboroughs second Republican Party fundraiser of the year. He is delivering the keynote address, not merely moderating a panel. The money raised for the dinner will go to Cheshire County Republicans. It all seems pretty cut and dried.

(25,907 posts)Anyone who considers MSNBC a liberal oasis is living in a fool's paradise. Its corporate overlords tolerate the relative handful of liberal commentators only to the extent that they generate a sufficient revenue stream. They're probably salivating over the prospect into turning the network into wall-to-wall neocons, teabaggers & talibornagains - with a couple of token third-way 'Democrats' thrown in for good measure.

(25,907 posts)I refer you back to the OP, in which a blatant double standard exists and Joe Scab-ro runs rampant while liberals are punished and/or banished for much less.

(904 posts)...remember how they treated Keith Olbermann when he was "busted" donating to Democratic candidates?
I think it's time we begin to take another look at MSNBC. As you stated, it's owned by Comcast, and as such will only be as "liberal" as Comcast allows it to be.
If MSNBC were truly a "liberal" oasis, they would have on guests like Noam Chomsky, Chris Hedges, Naomi Klein, and others of their vein. They also would not have run Keith out of 30 Rock. The truth is, they are a CORPORATE entity - with all that entails.
There are outlets out there who are truly "liberal" - and in the best sense of the word: Democracy Now, Pacifica Radio (even with its financial and operational problems), and a few others come to mind.

Just sayin'

(25,907 posts)Ya gotta ask yourself that - especially when Joe Scab-ro actively fundraises for repugs with impunity.

(36,818 posts)But I'd say the fact that it bills itself as a progressive network makes it a progressive network.

(904 posts)...because people and organizations can bill themselves as anything they want, and what they claim and what is the truth are often two different things.
Look no further than Foxy News. They bill themselves as "Fair and Balanced". Are they?
