Luckily I have little in it that can spoil.
It is almost old enough to require those huge ice blocks carried with tongs.
The conversation with the landlord may be interesting. I think it's time for a new one. He may not.

(1,363 posts)I have bought 3 fridges in 6 years. THREE.Count 'em. 3.
Yeah, it's miserable. I will never again buy an ELECTROLUX. They were right when they said 'Nothing sucks like Eleectrlux".
Thanks Lowes.
They also delivered the second fridge and the next morning my kitchen was uderwater since they failed to hook up the ice maker / water valve properly. The fridge never got below 56 degrees. Brand new. Yeah.
Thanks, Lowes.
I raised 3 levels of hell and they brought me out yet another fridge. within a month it was freezing everything in the fridge. woke up to find everything...everything frozen. It was under warranty, still had to pay for a service call. Thanks,Lowes. No more Amana's, No more Eleectrolux over priced crap here. And, I'm done with Lowes.
Zero stars for customer service. END OF RANT.
Hey, I feel better!

(1,426 posts)all of them are still working ...
I bought one while selling my previous house ( updating kitchen) and 2 after I moved into my new home (one for kitchen and another for the basement)
the fourth fridge was a mini fridge that I purchased to perserve baby food after hurricane sandy .. it was a small fridge that I could power with my tiny generator ..

(9,808 posts)Which sounds like the opening to a bad joke, but in the past 13 years, we have replaced a dishwasher (last week, got an $800 Bosch for $350 - floor model), a dryer (6 years ago, still great), washing machine (9 years ago, has needed one service call when a sock and an underwire got caught in the drain) and a refrigerator (when we bought the house). They're quick to deliver, they do a good job of set up, and their warranty service is pretty good.
I strongly suggest watching their floor model sales. If you can bear a scrape or two, they're excellent.
The other place I recommend is IKEA. I remodeled my grandmother's kitchen in 2010 with ikea cabs and appliances. They all worked perfectly, have excellent features and they have long comprehensive warranties. The ikea downside is limited models, but they're major brands.

(40,205 posts)I had a repairman tell me that now the life expectancy of a refrigerator is 6 years. How is that progress?

(15,088 posts)We have a 25-year-old refrigerator that has shelves held together with duct tape. We've discussed whether to buy a new, more-efficient refrigerator not held together with duct tape, but it works, so we're keeping it.

(1,385 posts)Modern refrigerators are so much more efficient than older ones that you save money by replacing them. Usually not worth a service call to repair an old vs what you save on electricity.

(1,241 posts)It was cold enough outside that I could put stuff in an unheated room just fine, it kept it in the 30's, but now it's warming up and I have ruined some food. I'm moving and didn't want to move a fridge twice but I think I might go buy a new one today.

(36,926 posts)Our other one, think it is a Kenmore, lasted that long also. It wasn't the right size for the new house, so we retired it to the basement. Probably still works.
