Canada has officially adopted the Housing First strategy for tackling homelessness and mental illness after a convincing study was made public Tuesday.
The Mental Health Commission of Canada unveiled the results of its At Home/Chez Soi program, proving that placing homeless people with mental health issues into stable housing is not just the most effective way to address homelessness, its also the most cost-effective.
The study found that 62 per cent of patients provided with immediate access to permanent housing stayed housed by the end of the two-year program, while only 31 per cent of people not housed were able to get themselves out of homelessness.

Imagine if young women were given a path to show them that they can~and should~raise their own child.

(4,959 posts)Well, duh, of course it does. Homeless? Here's some place to live! Live here as long as you want/need. No strings attached. No 90 day bullshit. No proof of sobriety, no proof of job job searches, here's a fucking house, or apartment. In fact, here is access to social services so you *can* properly work on those other issues (joblessness, substance abuse, physical & mental health problems).
Look, you're not homeless anymore. Yay!
God, the way we handle so-called social services is so fucked up. How the fuck are people supposed to get their lives together when the most basic things -- food, shelter -- are in constant limbo?
HOUSING IS A HUMAN RIGHT!
HOUSING FIRST!!!
