Canada adopts housing first strategy to address homelessness.

By Matt Kieltyka

Canada has officially adopted the Housing First strategy for tackling homelessness and mental illness after a convincing study was made public Tuesday.

The Mental Health Commission of Canada unveiled the results of it’s At Home/Chez Soi program, proving that placing homeless people with mental health issues into stable housing is not just the most effective way to address homelessness, it’s also the most cost-effective.

The study found that 62 per cent of patients provided with immediate access to permanent housing stayed housed by the end of the two-year program, while only 31 per cent of people not housed were able to get themselves out of homelessness.

Silly Canadians just don't know that the poor, the homeless and severely mentally ill are that way because they are lazy and stupid ... jeeze, no matter how much Canada's neighbors to the south try set an example of vilifying the poor ... those damned Canadians just won't get on board.

...If a young mother wants to raise her child but is faced with walls deterring her...

Imagine if young women were given a path to show them that they can~and should~raise their own child.

Well, duh, of course it does. Homeless? Here's some place to live! Live here as long as you want/need. No strings attached. No 90 day bullshit. No proof of sobriety, no proof of job job searches, here's a fucking house, or apartment. In fact, here is access to social services so you *can* properly work on those other issues (joblessness, substance abuse, physical & mental health problems).

Look, you're not homeless anymore. Yay!

God, the way we handle so-called social services is so fucked up. How the fuck are people supposed to get their lives together when the most basic things -- food, shelter -- are in constant limbo?

HOUSING IS A HUMAN RIGHT!

HOUSING FIRST!!!

But hey we don't want them to become dependent! You know how helping people does that.

Canada has such a different attitude about things like this, its tempting to move there. Too bad its so cold in the winter. I don't think I could take it.

to Canada during W idiot's attempts to destroy America. I became a permanent resident after the Repugs stole the 2004 election for W and his puppet-master Cheney.

I am an American citizen, but I prefer to live in Canada.
