As the noose knots around David Samson's neck, it will crush Christie's windpipe, too.

With the news that Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance is now investigating the operations role played by recently departed Port Authority chairman David Samson, Chris Christie's political free fall is screaming toward impact. According to a former Port Authority official, Samson's chief PA assistant -- a lawyer-lobbyist who came to the Port from Samson's law firm -- was at PA headquarters on a daily basis, working with Christie's henchmen Bill Baroni and David Wildstein as they plotted strategy.

And then there's the fact that Samson owns a law firm whose clients did business with the Port Authority -- that's conspiracy no matter how you slice it. There's no need for the Feds to give anyone immunity: Christie will can be nailed on his relationship with Samson alone.

There never was anything remotely credible about that cover story, but Chris Christie's only other option was to tell the truth and resign. Instead, he wrapped his arms around David Samson and hung on like death. Samson was never willing to take the fall for Christie: He's 74 years old, a man long accustomed to pulling the strings behind closed doors, a Jersey don. Christie has no leverage over him; Samson refused to speak with Christie Report investigators. As the noose knots around Samson's neck, it will crush Christie's windpipe, too.

With Cyrus Vance in the mix Christie's officially got more things crawling up his butt than a road kill deer in July! This is what its going to take to bring him down. There's no way everybody will be able to keep their stories straight. What they make up to keep them out of trouble in one investigation is sure to sink them in another.
