Well, that was exactly 48 weeks ago, so I figure today is her and Beau's birthday...I found Beau about 10 days later, same location, and they looked the exact same age, so odds are they're from the same litter. Oh, and they're girls with boys' names...couldn't tell at first and I assumed wrong! Happy Birthday!
Poor little Beau just got a bath...she was really dirty, and her eyes were bad from the URI

joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Kept four...he was good with all of them...I kept them apart the first couple nights...Sam was really sick for a bit, but when introduced it was love at first sight...all he had was India, since I lost both melanie and Scarlet a few months earlier, and I think he was lonely...they all loved him...Sam, though, I think is his favorite.
Also, every single kitten I rescued was female...that probably helps with his acceptance...no one going to challenge him.

(6,787 posts)Thank you joeybee12. Two sweet little girls are now loved and safe and even have a big brother.

(6,787 posts)You are naming some of your kids after Gone with the Wind characters. I had a Melanie, a Scarlett, and an India. I also have three rescues - Millie (after Thoroughly Modern Millie), Pumpkin Pie (because he is the color of pumpkin pie with whipped cream) and Smokey Joe (my husband named him -'nuff said).
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)for Bonnie Blue Butler...they're still younger than Sam and Beau.

(12,272 posts)At any rate, they are both very content and happy kitties now. Good work.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)but has a strong will...Beau didn't have the URI as bad and had a nice little fat belly even though she was dirty when I snagged her...she was getting her share of the food!
siligut
(12,272 posts)In humans infant nutrition is a factor in adult obesity, so I was attempting to relate it to your rescue kitties. I strong will goes a long way toward survival, I agree.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)And Melanie was always bigger...must have been a nutrition issue in the womb, because Scarlet was the smallest of the 5 kittens, and stayed that way.

(12,272 posts)I hope you don't mind, I used your URLs: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x9462275
They are adorable and their names suit them well, Scarlett O'Hara is a rather petite, though spunky heroine and Melanie Wilkes is the solid, steadfast one.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Scarlet was a very vocal kitten, so she got the name Scarlet, but as a kitten Melanie was very, very quiet...I really think her vocal chords hadn't quite developed when I got her!

(12,272 posts)You are a very good cat parent, 17 & 17-1/2 are a ripe old ages.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)around as long as possible! Thanks.
Just a note that in a stray kitteh a fat belly can be a sign of worms. You'd know by know if that were the case, of course.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)In this case it was because I knew there were some kittens and I was leaving a lot of wet food daily for the mom and kittens to get...little Beau certainly wans't being pushed aside at feeding...she was probably the one doing the pushing!

(56,177 posts)was very sick, but then the second night they played all night with each other's paws underneath the doors, so I introduced them and they adored one another...he was good with all the new kittens, all were female, so that helped.

(1,421 posts)We adopted him off the street and we believed he was a female kitten, declawed. When we found no owner we took him to the vet to find out he was a 2+ year old boy. Even he seemed surprised by the news.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Yeah, my excuse with Sam was I took her straight to the vet and they wanted a name, so I said Sam...with Beau, she was very dirty and I thought I saw something...apparently not!

Good on ya.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)She really is, too...I have India, almost 20, and the others don't know how to act around her, and bump her as a greeting too roughly and she's too frail for that, but Sam gently greets her and grooms her a little...it's like she has empathy, which cats aren't supposed to have.

(1,789 posts)Beau looks like a feral I trapped at work last fall (named her Sister). She and her 2 brothers were skin and bones, full of worms, and all went through URIs and ringworm. But they all got healthy and adopted through a local no-kill shelter. The feral mother, who is as healthy as a horse, stayed with me for socialization. She liked my 5 cats right away and is slowly learning to trust me, so I've decided to keep her. Watching a feral cat/kitten go from pitiful sick to healthy and adopted is a wonderful journey, isn't it?
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Glad you helped those guys...Sam and Beau didn't have ringworm when I got them, but a few months down the road, it showed up...the vet said they were carriers apparently, and it took a while...they didn't pass it along to the others, which is good...but boy did they run when I tried to the apply the topical treatment!

(9,314 posts)Beau could be a nickname for Beautiful or Beautiful Baby (which she is) and Sam could be short for Samantha. I believe have seen that before....

PS They are just too wonderful.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Although that is spelling it wrong!
Samantha
(9,314 posts)I think since the names have already been chosen, with a little thought, they can be made to work as nicknames for proper names that seem feminine. They are beautiful kittens, and I am so happy they found a wonderful new home.

(9,298 posts)Saving precious kitteh lives. I have often thought how interesting it would be to have DU folks check in with a tabulation of puppies, kittens, dogs and cats we've rescued over the years. Both from shelters and "the wild." I'm sure it would reach into the thousands.
