Fox News’ demented poster boy: Why angry rancher Cliven Bundy is no patriot

The right's new fixation: An angry old white man who thinks freedom means not having to follow the law

EDWIN LYNGAR

The latest right-wing media poster-victim, Cliven Bundy, is just the latest in a long line of desert dwellers who thinks he or she should not have to follow the law and has a god-given right to unlimited use of public resources, in this case, rangeland. I know the mentality well, because I grew up in rural Nevada and clung desperately to such beliefs until only a few years ago.

Bundy has not paid grazing fees in close to 20 years, while the federal government has, with painful, stupid moves, tried to somehow deal with him. Bundy also faced restrictions because he continued to graze cattle on a slice of public land reserved for the endangered desert tortoise. He was invited to talk to Sean Hannity (of course) about the “standoff.”

“We want freedom,” Bundy said. I don’t know what freedom Bundy’s talking about. He does not own the land nor does he even pay the modest fees required to use it. Thousands of ranchers across the West pay fees for their businesses, but Bundy thinks he should get to use public resources to make a personal profit. Cliven Bundy, far from being a patriot, is also clearly a straight-up communist.

Bundy is using the language of freedom, patriotism and outright paranoia to further his business interests. He succeeded wildly in drawing other “patriots” to his slice of contested desert. I don’t know these exact people, but the words and phrases they used were the nursery rhymes of my childhood. I’ve been listening to ignorant people bitch about the federal “gub’met,” since I could crawl, and I’m weary of it. I can’t bear to hear poor people rally to the defense of moneyed interests like mining and ranching, like well-trained, bleating sheep. As tired and silly as I find his language, clearly it worked. He so inflamed the lunatic militia movement, that many rallied to him, often from out of state, with guns and naked threats. They created a real possibility that someone might get killed, so the feds backed down.

wish I could find a mile square pasture to graze my livestock on for 1.50 each cow/calf pair- a month!!

Grazing where the land owners ('We The people') pay for all maintenance , fences, roads, reseeding grasses, re-open trampled, wallowed water.

a not so widely known practice of pulling up native flora to make the ground more welcoming for grasses that cows can eat. Yet another costly (to taxpayers) activity conducted solely for the benefit of welfare ranchers.

Caption:Bulldozer at work chaining brush to promote grass growth for cattle, some 5-years before the lake would claim this area. This work exposed bison bones at the Skillet Mountain site and lead to excavations

Cattle are an invasive species and we spend billions to facilitate them by tearing up the desert for these marginally successful ranching operations.

It's more complex than superficial reports would imply.

And the folks who promote this travesty, performed by BLM and USNFS (which means we're picking up the tab) are the very same who object to the ESA and listing anything on it because it would mean that the habitat for listed flora and fauna would be off limits to development, ie, no cattle grazing. This is another reason we should get rid of the gorging of beef in our diets and where a lot of our money goes down the drain. Talk about entitlements! And you never, ever hear the TP or GOP talk about this set of issues.

our family has relegated it to buying it for only special occasions. Probably a lot healthier and certainly better economically.
It is such a shame that we destroy so much of our natural habitat for the financial benefit of so very few. The almighty dollar takes precedence over virtually everything in this country much to our detriment as a nation.

i stopped eating beef, in particular, and meat - in general many years ago and I have been far healthier since.

I object to the capitalist system because I saw this coming a long time ago and chose to avoid participation as much as i could. I only begrudgingly participate as much as is absolutely necessary to survive since it's nearly impossible to survive otherwise... sadly.

Fox News and Hannity use this guy as a way to drive up their viewership and sell more ads, it is all about the money. Fox's reporting is irresponsible and dishonest and all of the rhetoric on their shows will probably inflame some nut case to go out and start innocent shooting people.

public (stolen from Native Americans) land has been handed over to corporations, or large, private cattle owners. In Arizona it's Kaibab Industries logging the forests, in addition to the family cattle business.

My sources tell me that Cliven might be suffering from dementia. He was billed for 20 years for grazing fees, How much was this fee? 1.35! Cliven was NOT making a anti-government statement, he just forgot to pay the bill. His grandson is just exploiting his disability.
This poor old man is being used by right wing media and right wing vigilantes who want to play with their guns and pretend they are living in Syria or the Ukraine's. But we know all know how evil the Bureau of Land management is? those forest rangers? Regular storm troopers! NOT!
Why don't these militia types protect private property from a foreign corporation who wants to put up a pipeline of toxic sludge? No...it's more important to protect a old man who forgot to pay his bill.
