British Pathé uploads 85,000 historic films to YouTube

Thousands of hours of historical footage showing major events, celebrities and simple day-to-day life from 1896 until 1976 has been uploaded to YouTube.

British Pathé, the newsreel maker which documented all walks of life on video during the 20th Century, has uploaded its entire collection of moving images to YouTube.
The archive of 3,500 hours of footage was digitised in 2002 thanks in part to a grant from the National Lottery, and is now freely accessible to anyone around the world for free.

I have had many jobs in the film industry and one that I really enjoyed was cataloging film collections.

Due to the expense and rarity of cameras and film, not that much film was shot in the early days. And reducing that number even further, celluloid, especially the earlier stuff, is extremely flammable. Many films of which there are no copies are lost forever.

YouTube and Hulu are two reasons I don't pay for cable. There are lifetimes worth of viewing on YouTube.

Now you can have a double feature, a newsreel, and a cartoon in one YT viewing.

Back in the day we used to see that stuff at our cinemas here in the UK inbetween the A and B movies along with the Pearl & Dene adverts.

The film quality was amazing, though it still has that funny speed.

It reminded me what horrible people she and her family were, but for
some reason the British people tolerated them and apparently loved
all the pomp and ceremony. I'll never get that, but it is interesting.
