A bad movement is about to be flushed
?resize=616%2C346
The START:
Its been a very bad week for talk show host, Rush Limbaugh, and a very rewarding week for the millions of Americans who have protested his extreme hate speech for decades. Two years ago, newer groups like BoycottRush, FlushRush and StopRush, began a massive national boycott movement that is exposing Limbaugh and crushing his career. Here are four new recent developments:
1. Politico published an article revealing that Tea Party organizations (some created by the Koch brothers) have contributed millions to Rush Limbaugh. What does this mean? For Rush it means they helped sustain him while thousands of sponsors pulled their ads. It means this may lead to an investigation to see if the funding was done legally. According to the FCC, if you receive money from an organization that pays you to promote their propaganda, without telling your audience, it may be considered payola - and it may be illegal.
Politico:
The Heritage Foundation at the end of January ended its five-year sponsorship of El Rushbos show, for which it had paid more than $2 million in some years and more than $9.5 million overall. In 2012, FreedomWorks paid at least $1.4 million to make him an endorser, though its not clear that the sponsorship is ongoing.
2. Forbes Senior Political Contributor and regular on Forbes On Fox, Rick Ungar, believes Rush Limbaugh has become a joke. He also shows, via FrontPageMag.com data, that Limbaugh has outlived his audience. Ungar, also known as Forbes token lefty implies Rush is now in the, toss out the old bring in the new, demographic category. The median age of his dwindling audience (as well as the aforementioned sponsor boycott) no longer appeal to advertisers.
Rick Ungar:
At long last, it appears that Rush Limbaugh has run out of steam. I have to acknowledge that I have sensed Rush getting by on fumes for some time now (yes, I tune into his show from time to time to enjoy his broadcasting skills if not his message). However, it was only recently that the world of Limbaugh crossed that thin red line from partially serious to total self-parody and audience deceptiona line crossed from which there is often no return.

(45,251 posts)Do I want him off the air at long last? Yes. That's a victory. I just wish it had come long, long ago.
And, for every Limbaugh that goes off the air (if he does), another ten (at least) will spring up.

hes considered to be a little too crazy/hateful for your average middle/upper class flush listener.
i am embarrassed that he calls my beloved SF Bay area home.
i wish he'd move his hateful ass to where he belongs, like texas or deep georgia.
sorry guys, but as long as that is the MAJORITY of your populations, you have those reputations hanging around your necks. I know Atlanta and Austin are bastions for thinking people, but those are beacons in an entire ocean of hate and stupidity.

(2,529 posts)It's not just Limbaugh. Sponsors have been pulling away from other right-wing programs. They've all suffered collateral damage. Most of the well recognized conservative hosts will be around for awhile because they're protected by long-term contracts, but it's a matter of time. Their main demographic are senior citizens. Only 10% of their listener base is in the coveted 35 to 54 age range. They always had a dearth of female listeners and they've been hemorrhaging the ones they do have. They're recruiting practically zero new audience among the under 34 crowd. Radio stations are losing money big time on talk radio and it's a lose-lose situation for them. Military troops aren't happy with talk radio either. The June 3rd, 2006 issue of Stars and Stripes, "Future Military Radio Could Be More Pop, Less Talk," stated that talk radio wasn't a big draw for the military crowd under 34. They would prefer music programs or sports programs on AFN. It's probably the conservative big wigs at the Pentagon that force conservative talk radio on them.

(45,251 posts)of his show. As far as comparing him to his replacements, you seem to pay a lot more attention to his show than I ever have or ever will, so I will take your word for it. However, that is like saying one turd is better than another. Either way, they're turds.
As far as Limbaugh's having talent as an absolute , that is your opinion. While you are certainly entitled to it, I don't share it. I think many people with no morals and no regard for honesty or fairness could bloviate for hours against everything Democrats do or attempt.

(2,522 posts)I worked with dittoheads and had to clean up after the college republicans. They (both groups) would come up with some of the most off-the-wall bullshit that seemed to have a common source so I asked. I started to listen to him in order to be forewarned of the next day's serving of bullshit. They didn't seem to understand that what he said on Monday was directly contradicted by his Thursday musings. I continued to listen to Rushbo and irritate the dittoheads until my blood pressure hit 220/110. At that point I gave it up as a bad health habit.
Rush, his replacements and imitators are propagandists. To be unaware of their techniques, to dismiss them all as "turds", is self-blinding. It is far better to know your enemies.

Just since I'm on this topic of farts/assholes/rw-talk radio...
Isn't this all just a playbook game by some very moneyed interests? Does it matter which bloviated asshole is making the tooting sounds? Their masters will switch the cast, tune the messages, infiltrate and try to destroy from within.
Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a mole within the Koch/Adelman/RNC/ALEC/etc. organizations that is getting ready to post on YouTube? Hope springs....

The left didn't invest money in radio, but the righties did. LA, Portland, etc... all good lefty markets lost their progressive voices because big right wing money bought the airwaves. WCPT here in Chicago survives, thankfully, but that's one of just a few stations left.

(32,723 posts)...and all of the listeners are penniless, yogurt slurping hippie types.
Meanwhile Limbaugh was presented as wildly popular.
He wasn't really.
The way he got so many listeners was because he gave his show away for FREE when he first got started. It was presented to local station owners as three hours of air time for free with a built in audience and don't YOU want to be the station that they tune to? Local sponsors will flock to any show that's considered popular regardless of format.
Next thing you know his show wasn't free anymore but station managers were afraid to stop it because the audience turned out to be a bunch of gun happy assholes that threatened to not only show up at the station but to find out where they lived and where their kids went to school. IOW: Domestic terrorists.

(5,106 posts)Many years ago before he was a "household name," (I'd never heard of him) an old friend and former college roommate was visiting from out of state. She recommended that I tune into him if he was on locally. Although she was always liberal, she thought he was very (unintentionally) amusing, and believed he would crack me up. We went to school in an era where there were any number liberal send-ups of right wing, Birch Society type conservatives who were more openly bigoted at that time. Colbert and Co. just reinvented it in a more sophisticated way.

Single: Won't Get Fooled Again
We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgment of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
The change, it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fold, that's all
And the world looks just the same
And history ain't changed
Cause the banners, they are flown in the next war
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
No, no!
I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
Though I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya?
There's nothing in the streets
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Are now parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!"
I say this only as a comment on how Conservatives need to have someone tell them how to live their lives.

And he posted a picture of two very gaudy decorated mansions and he's like "See if you can guess which palace is Saddam Hussein's and which is Trump's. Which is a trick question - they're both Trump's!"

(728 posts)There is one thing that Rush will never be good at, and that is direct discussion with someone who doesn't hold his view. He just can't do it, and fails every time he tries. I've heard some of the rare times he has tried to take on a liberal; he gets whipped every time, and dumps to a commercial. Rush must always have callers that agree with him since he is awful at actual debate. Anyone can sit and bloviate unchallenged, but a true talent can debate. Rush has no talent.
JohnnyRingo
(18,628 posts)I agree that he can't stand up to a live counterpoint, but he has a unique gift to word things in such a way that people would think: "when he puts it that way, that makes sense to me". Unfortunately for his fans, those who tried to quote him (or Hannity) in social settings don't share that gift and come off sounding stupid.
A case in point from a couple weeks ago: I studied up on Croatia to find out what happened there, who the Croates are, and whether I'd have to change the map colors on my Risk game board. When I went out that night, I used it to spur a conversation on the recent events.
One friend, who I know is a devoted (and aging) Dittohead, interjected "I love Putin!" as I was speaking of the effect on Croation Muslims. It got very quiet while the three or four of us just stared at him for a few uncomfortable seconds, as if he just made the most ignorant statement since Nixon declared himself not a crook. Finally, I informed him that Rush wanted him to make the dubious point that he wishes Obama was a strong and powerful leader like the current Russian president. He didn't want my friend to go out and sound like he fell head over heels with man-love for a buff and shirtless dictator.
It's unfortunate for Limbaugh only that his gift has gone from "talent from God" and a "golden microphone" to a Life Alert and the clapper.
Populist_Prole
(5,364 posts)I used to listen regularly back when I was younger and impressionable ( stupid )
He really is adept at sophistry and using speciousness ( even as he claimed counter-arguments against him as specious, but that's projection for you ) to generate talking points, but his ability to have total control over his debate environment on-air really solidified his position.
As both of you above noted, it's both fairly easy to discern if a person you're talking with is a dittohead and also frustrating and unpleasant. As noted, his fans lack his talent for sophistry and their arguments more or less self-destruct without the ability to control the discourse. Oh they'll try all right; interrupting, talk over you, speak with faux smug snarky-ness, but real people in real life won't put up with that garbage....and they can't hit the eject button to a commercial break or seek support in sycophants for counter arguments via screened calls. They don't like that. Not one bit. So they tend to get nasty.

(56,828 posts)Shouldn't both sides be in trouble - not just Rush, but all the other contributors that kept him afloat?
Of course, since they're all the super-rich, they can afford the best lawyers and keep it tied up in the courts until Rush drops dead of a heart attack one of these years.
JohnnyRingo
(18,628 posts)...I share that observation.
I know some on the right who say they don't listen to Limbaugh anymore. One especially thoughtful republican even told me that he doesn't think even Rush himself believes what he says on the air, and he just spouts outrageous nonsense for exposure. In other words, he's gone from right wing oracle to circus sideshow clown.
Unfortunately, that doesn't mean views have changed, just that his listeners have found a new source for there canned outrage. That's still significant because there isn't one single star that shines as brightly as Limbaugh in his prime.
I always wondered why he didn't make the logical jump to sat-rad when howard Stern did. Perhaps he wasn't invited. I can't imagine the offer is still on the table now.
