But since you brought up the solitude issue (which just isn't the case anymore), I must relate my favorite wilderness fire lookout joke:

The lookout guy had packed in 18 miles with a USFS mule train. He had been at Isolation Peak for weeks, in total solitude. He was in bliss! But he kept a sharp eye on a section of the trail up to the lookout, just in case. One day, he spotted a hiker two miles away, on the trail to the lookout. "GODAMN! HERE COMES A CROWD!"
