Rush Limbaugh Takes Time Off To Get Second Cochlear Implant

http://www.allaccess.com/net-news/archive/story/128909/rush-limbaugh-takes-time-off-to-get-second-cochlea

RUSH LIMBAUGH took some time away from his show last week to undergo a second cochlear implant surgery. The surgery, announced on his show APRIL 8th, added an implant to restore hearing in his right ear; he received an implant in his left ear 13 years ago.

He said that the current implant has caused his hearing to deteriorate over time, with over half the electrodes in the device detached because they were causing him to develop a facial tic.

1. I looked up the risks of cochlear implant surgeries

The FDA listed all of these possibilities, but the risk of the patient emitting disturbing and offensive sounds wasn't one of them!

Risks from the Surgical Implant Procedure

Injury to the facial nerve --this nerve goes through the middle ear to give movement to the muscles of the face. It lies close to where the surgeon needs to place the implant, and thus it can be injured during the surgery. An injury can cause a temporary or permanent weakening or full paralysis on the same side of the face as the implant.

Meningitis --this is an infection of the lining of the surface of the brain. People who have abnormally formed inner ear structures appear to be at greater risk of this rare, but serious complication.

Cerebrospinal fluid leakage --the brain is surrounded by fluid that may leak from a hole created in the inner ear or elsewhere from a hole in the covering of the brain as a result of the surgical procedure.

Perilymph fluid leak --the inner ear or cochlea contains fluid. This fluid can leak through the hole that was created to place the implant.

Infection of the skin wound.

Blood or fluid collection at the site of surgery.

Attacks of dizziness or vertigo.

Tinnitus, which is a ringing or buzzing sound in the ear.

Taste disturbances --the nerve that gives taste sensation to the tongue also goes through the middle ear and might be injured during the surgery.

Numbness around the ear.

Reparative granuloma --this is the result of localized inflammation that can occur if the body rejects the implant.

There may be other unforeseen complications that could occur with long term implantation that we cannot now predict.

2. My theory on his hearing loss was it being the result of his drug related weight loss. That caused

him to lose most of the fat in his head creating a vacuum and imploding his ear drums!

As far as a facial tic, I'd say keep it Rush, it's YOU!

Actually I've heard the kind of hearing loss he experienced can be related to opiate addiction. No doubt the pills were responsible for his weight loss back then. I know hydros sure took the weight off me through a couple serious knee surgeries. I had to make myself eat something a couple times a day or I would have been perfectly happy just laying around stoned out!

Hillbilly Heroin abuse leads to hearing loss. Too bad it doesn't lead to him becoming mute.

13. Does he still keep his job?

Looking over the Courthouse News, it looks like there are about three or four lawsuits filed every week because someone took time off work for a medical procedure and their employer wrongfully fired them. These are, of course, only the cases where someone actually took the time to file a lawsuit, not any other time (or times) when someone got canned unfairly, shrugged that that's the way things are, and went out looking for another job.

Is Mr. Limbaugh at risk of losing his job for missing work? Magic 8 Ball says, "It Is Highly Unlikely."
