Republican lawmakers in Missouri are set to raise three articles of impeachment against Gov. Jay Nixon (D) at a state House hearing Wednesday.
Three Republican state lawmakers have raised complaints against Nixon that they say warrant his removal from office, according to the Kansas City Star. The complaints included an executive order permitting same-sex couples married out of state to file joint tax returns in Missouri and not calling special elections to fill vacant legislative seats in a timely fashion.
A third complaint accuses Nixon of insufficiently punishing officials who released names of Missourians that held concealed carry permits to a federal agent last year. The speaker of the Missouri House, state Rep. Tim Jones (R), said at the time that he was concerned the incident "may be a back-door attempt to create the Eric Holder gun registry."
The articles of impeachment against Nixon were filed in February. The governor's office dismissed the maneuver at the time as a "publicity stunt," and the Kansas City Star characterized the impeachment effort's chance of succeeding as "miniscule."
