Caroline Kennedy, whose endorsement of Barack Obama in 2008 was a major setback for Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign, as well as a personal blow, said Thursday that she would “absolutely” support Mrs. Clinton should she decide to run for president again.

Ms. Kennedy, whom President Obama recently named ambassador to Japan, is the latest high-profile Obama supporter from 2008 to endorse a potential 2016 run by Mrs. Clinton, who has yet to make her intentions clear.

“I’m sure she’s looking forward to being a grandmother,” Ms. Kennedy told ABC News during a series of interviews as Mr. Obama arrived in Japan. “I know she’s got to decide soon, so, you know, I hope so.”


Mrs. Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, had been close to the Kennedy family. They were surprised when Ms. Kennedy, the daughter and only surviving child of President John F. Kennedy, endorsed Mr. Obama in a January 2008 Op-Ed column in The New York Times with the headline “A President Like My Father.”
