Cliven Bundy Is Not a "Welfare Queen"

Cliven Bundy Is Not a "Welfare Queen"

By Amanda Marcotte

Taking a swipe at Cliven Bundy by calling him a "welfare queen" made the leap from social media snarking to cable news on Thursday, when CNN anchor Bill Weir brought it up in an interview with Bundy. "You are writing off a whole class of people, African-Americans, as sort of dangerously dependent because they get government assistance," Weir stated. "At the same time, you’re grazing your cows on public land for free. So, how are you not sort of a welfare queen in a cowboy hat?"

Weir's analogy is deeply unfair to people on welfare in so many ways, starting with the myth that people on welfare are defrauding the government in the same way that Bundy is doing. While there are people who lie on food-stamp applications and there was that one lady who ran a major welfare fraud scheme four decades ago, the overwhelming majority of people who apply for government assistance are honest people who are just trying to survive. The rate of food-stamp fraud—which includes people lying on applications and selling food stamps for cash—is low, about a penny on every dollar spent on the program. Plus, people who do commit food-stamp fraud generally go to jail for it. They don't hole up in their homes with an illegal army of gun nuts while the right-wing media champions them for their anti-government activities.

~snip~

Weir no doubt meant well, but by invoking the image of the "welfare queen," he inadvertently reinforced the myth that people who turn to welfare are criminal, lazy, and dependent. You know, the exact myth that Bundy was leaning on to justify his insinuation that black people were better off under slavery. Government benefits are set up by the citizenry as a safety net we can all depend on if we fall down on our luck. Cliven Bundy, on the other hand, comes up with half-baked rationalizations for his desire to profit off stealing from the taxpayers. (...)

I'm definitely adding that book to my reading list and will be recommending it to others.

If I could afford to, I'd send a copy to everyone of our representatives here in Nevada.

13. You're welcome. This issue existed on the fringes of "mainstream" environmentalism for years

and was generally of little interest to urban-based, or Washington-centered, enviro groups.

Guess we should thank our rightwing "friends" that subsidized public lands abuse (i.e., "welfare ranching," though we haven't even begun to talk about "welfare logging" yet!) is having its moment in the sun...

... and he's not paying for it.

Why is it our local Wal-Mart will call the cops on a thirteen year old girl shoplifting a $1.99 tube of glitter purple eye shadow and the cops will take the kid away, but this racist clown doesn't get a ride in a police car???

What the fuck is wrong with our society???

he gets his grazing for free. What people seem to think is that everything the Interior Dept. does apparently should be for free. It takes people, fee, fine, usage permits, etc, and a whole host of schemes or devices to fund no only BLM operations but everything from park to historic sites and places. People might not like it, but the Congress forces them in budgets and appropiations.

We (us), US own a lots of open acreage, we may not alway us be happy with how it run or used, but nothing is for free, except the senior veterans National Park Pass.

but why doesn't the government seize this jackass's accounts? Does he really have his money that well hidden?

Also, why were a bunch of nuts who probably don't have a pot to piss in gunning up to defend this guy?

10. If he was paying his grazing fees, he'd be a "welfare queen in a cowboy hat"

Grazing your cattle on private land in that area is between 10 and 20 times more costly than federal grazing fees, and state land is at least 5 times more expensive than federal land. So if he was paying the incredibly low federal grazing fees, he'd be subsidized by the feds and would be receiving corporate welfare.

But since he's not paying his fees, he's a deadbeat and a thief.
