In my experience, almost everybody does it sometimes, and I think I know some people who seem to lie constantly, just for joy and practice

In political fights, however, the wrong lie can be very costly, and so I think it's always worth looking for nice factual soundbites that discredit an opponent, like

The federal grazing district there was established a decade before Cliven was born, a dozen years before his family bought any of that property, fifteen years before the family began construction on that land, and close to twenty years before they ever grazed any cattle there

The wackadoodles won't listen, of course, but their heads were already filled with strange ideas -- such as "The county sheriff is the only legitimate law enforcement official" or "No court can hold me subject to Federal jurisdiction, if I don't recognize the Federal government" or "All our problems go back to the Fourteenth Amendment" -- so there may be little point in trying to reason with them

But most people aren't nuts, even if many are uninformed, and one can reason with them, if one has the right facts and if one is also willing to listen to what they say back
