Long ago American Conservatism was engineered by men with money

Conservatism explained as HIV for democracy...

Long ago American Conservatism was engineered by men with money and vision into an opportunistic disease designed to relentlessly attack democracy's immune system -- our courts, our schools, our free press, our electoral process, labor protections, etc. -- until the nation became weak enough to be knocked to its knees, chopped to bits and sold for parts.

That may be true, but the overall problem is still far older, though, as I pointed out. nt AverageJoe90 Apr 2014 #6

John C. Calhoun, for example, was an proud and shameless early shill for the antebellum slave power in the South in the late 1820s and '30s, like the Fire-Eaters who came after him two decades later. Andrew Jackson was a useful idiot for certain interests who sought gains from the destruction of the National Bank. Southern Dixiecrats in the 20th Century were themselves a largely ill-mannered and corrupt bunch who used intimidation, violence, and other immoral means to hold up an immoral system(Jim Crow) which not only directly harmed People of Color, but even harmed poor whites as well(albeit in a more indirect fashion), and really benefitted only a select few, namely, the core reactionary elite who ran these states during that time.

Jim Crow, more than anything, was a system of social & even economic control, designed to keep People of Color as a permanent social AND economic underclass and poor whites forever poor & forever fearful, while setting these two classes against each other time and time again.

The book told how the robber barons began the tactics we still see today. That book was published in the 1930s.
