Country Star Kacey Musgraves Angers Homophobes **MUST SEE VIDEO!**

A gay-positive song from the rising star makes her enemy of the far-right and a hero of GLAAD.

Country star Kacey Musgraves is making waves with her new song, "Follow Your Arrow," thanks to its message of acceptance — "Make lots of noise, kiss lots of boys/Or kiss lots of girls, if that's something that you're into." The song is riling conservatives and also netting her a spot at GLAAD's upcoming awards ceremony in New York City.

The song, off her album Same Trailer, Different Park, was greeted with hostility by Colorado pastor Kevin Swanson, who said in a radio broadcast that Musgraves was promoting homosexuality and would have been killed if she performed the song in an earlier time.

"If she had sang [sic] that thing in a country bar in the 1920s or 1880s in Denver, Colorado, somebody would’ve called for a rope," he said, reports The Huffington Post. "She would not have made it out of town."

Musgraves, a 25-year-old Texas native who's already performed at the Grammys, will perform "Follow Your Arrow" at the GLAAD Media Awards on May 3 in New York. Musgraves will be introduced by out country singer Chely Wright.

Country music has changed quite a bit and it is helping to change the culture around it, which is what music and the arts are supposed to do. Country music was never my first choice but I've come to love much country and folk over the years.

I have an appreciation for most music but was raised on Country and given my early years the songs resonated with me.

Kacey Musgraves’s Rebel Twang
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/17/magazine/kacey-musgravess-rebel-twang.html?_r=0

I'm not a fan of much country music, but after I read that NYTimes article about her, I just had to go looking cause of this:

...and her songwriting hero, the country maverick John Prine, about whom she wrote a song that contains the line “My idea of heaven is to burn one with John Prine.

A woman to my own heart; he's always been my songwriting hero, too. Kacey says the things she sings and writes songs about aren't controversial to her.

"I talk about things that have made an impression on me that a lot of people everywhere are going through." ~ Kacey Musgraves

Thank you for telling DU about her, William. I'd never even heard of her! Listening to that song you've posted gives me much hope for this country, our young people, the world.

Lyrics to "John Prine"

You get a little drunk, get a little loud
Stupid me and my rebel mouth
Ain't all wrong but I ain't all right
Don't see no world in black and white.

Grandma cried when I pierced my nose
Never liked doing what I was told
Don't judge me and I won't judge you
'Cause I ain't walking in your shoes

'Cause I ain't one to knock religion
Though it's always knocking me
Always running with the wrong crowd
Right where I wanna be
I'm not good at being careful
I just say what's on my mind
Like my idea of heaven
Is to burn one with John Prine

Maybe he would sit a while
And render me an illegal smile
And I bet that he would understand
Just how I feel and who I am

'Cause I ain't one to knock religion
Though it's always knocking me
Always running with the wrong crowd
Right where I wanna be
I'm not good at being careful
I just say what's on my mind
Like my idea of heaven
Is to burn one with John Prine

I play my life like truth or dare
I'm not all here but I'm all there
And all the colors people paint me
Don't they know they'll never change me, yeah?

'Cause I ain't one to knock religion
Though it's always knocking me
Always running with the wrong crowd
Right where I wanna be
I'm not good at being careful
I just say what's on my mind
Like my idea of heaven
Is to burn one with John Prine
Like my idea of heaven
Is to burn one with John Prine

but had to chuckle at her name. Our former congresswoman, Marilyn Musgrave, gained her portion of fame by pushing her 'defense of marriage' crap that very much relied on homophobia to energize it. Somewhere dear Marilyn is crapping her lily white unmentionables at the similarity of names, and that's a delightful thing.

Keep up the good work, Ms. Musgraves!

that I was NOT to be allowed to learn to dance when she heard they were teaching dancing (I swear I think it was square dancing?)

That plays HELL with your social life, but it began to help me look at things from the outside, and gave me more time to read, so I can't say it's was all bad.

The church...well, that was pretty much bad. The people anyway. The building was ok until a tornado knocked it down a few years after their collections had dropped. It just missed the services by a few hours, and I am sure god knew what time they started that crazy singing so I don't think it was a deliberate assassination attempt, I still suspect it was to send a message...
