Scientists say more coffee might be good for you

If you want another coffee refill, go ahead and have it.

According to a new study led by Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) scientists, drinking an extra cup or more of coffee every day might have significant health benefits.

Researchers found that people who increased their coffee consumption by that much over a four-year period had an 11 percent lower risk for type 2 diabetes compared with those who made no changes in coffee intake. Those who lowered their coffee consumption by more than one cup per day had a 17 percent higher risk of diabetes.

For the purposes of the study, a cup of coffee was defined as eight ounces, black, or with a small amount of milk and/or sugar. The effect was the same whether the subjects drank the caffeinated or decaffeinated java.

Statistical studies like this never take every possible factor into consideration.

I drink coffee on weekends but it isn't 'good' for me. The only thing 'good' for the human body is water, maybe some OJ and milk.

Usually these type of studies are a biased way of rationalizing ingrown habits. Since most of us are incapable of eating and drinking solely for health, let's see if we can't find something positive to say.

And sure enough, they tend to find what they're looking for.

Coffee is second only to mother's milk.

My parents brewed fresh coffee when they watched the 11PM news during my entire life. Coffee is life.

Coffee (the caffeinated stuff) lowers diabetes risk and has a host of other good effects IIRC. Helps Parkinson's disease and dementia, lowers risk of liver and colon cancer, increases life expectancy, and other stuff.

Yay!

I drank very little coffee till I read it seems to be a factor in lowering the risk for colon cancer. Now I drink several cups a day - I drink a lot of liquid a day period, stemming from having a bout with severe nephritis as a child and being told to do that.

"Would you like a little coffee with your cream and sugar?"

I can't drink the stuff unless it has enough creamer and sugar to basically equal sweetened condensed milk. Just without the dairy. (I use almond milk creamer made in a 2:1 ratio of water to soaked almonds.) And not hot. Always over ice or blended to frozen-smoothie consistency.

It was because I don't own a car anymore and carrying bottles or boxes of diet Pepsi by bus or by taxi is a bit impractical for a wheel-chair user. I've always liked iced coffee. So now I make cold brewed iced coffee every other day.

That may have been a waste of time.

I picked Lapsang Souchong as my favorite tea. It's a strong black tea with a smoky taste. Some describe it as tea for coffee lovers and "tea for Westerners" in China.

Maybe I'll just drink both coffee and tea. That should cover all the bases.

In passing I understand Winston Churchill enjoyed Lapsang Souchong with his ever present Cuban cigars.

These studies keep popping up, most of them paid for by the caffeine industry.
