(15,480 posts)One of Britain's best loved actors and a favorite of mine. Hoskins told the Guardian why he kept on working: "There's always someone who rings up and says: 'Now Bob, before you go, there's a cracking little swansong for you'."

In an interview, when asked what he owed his parents, he said, "Confidence. My mum used to say to me, 'If somebody doesn't like you, fuck 'em, they've got bad taste.'" When asked which living person he most despised, Hoskins named Tony Blair and claimed that "he's done even more damage than Thatcher". He made light of his similarities with film actor Danny DeVito, who he joked would play him in a film about his life. Hoskins announced his retirement from acting on 8 August 2012, due to his ongoing battle with Parkinson's disease.
He recounted being in rep theatre in Hull when they were touring Richard III many years ago with him in the title role. It was a matinee performance and he came out and said "Now is the Winter of our discontent...." then looked around at the audience of 4 who had turned up. "1...2....3....4" he counted. "My horse, my horse, my kingdom for a horse. Shall we all just go to the pub opposite?". And they all duly did and had a drink instead.

I read once that Hoskins was being considered to play the lead role in a Reid Fleming movie, but alas, it was not to be.
