Texas vet kept dog alive for blood transfusions months after planned euthanization, owners say

An Aledo family has been reunited with a dog they believed was put down in October. The family claims that vets convinced them that their dog, Sid, needed to be euthanized, then kept the 4-year-old pup alive and 'abusively kenneled' so they could collect blood from him.
--------
Last October, the Harris family said the clinic advised them to put Sid down the after doctors diagnosed him with a painful spine condition that would eventually cripple him.

That's when the Harris family allowed Dr. Lou Tierce to put down their beloved pet, CBS Dallas-Fort Worth reports. The clinic said it would bury Sid on a vet's farm.

But six months later, they got a disturbing call from a veterinarian technician: Sid was never euthanized, and instead spent most of his days in cage covered in his own urine and feces. Brewer told the family the clinic harvested blood from the pup for transfusions.

When the Harrises rescued Sid, they discovered that he could walk. He even jumped in the back of the family minivan on his own.

State and local authorities went to the Camp Bowie Animal Clinic in the 5700 block of Lovell Avenue on Tuesday. Several of the animals there were seized as evidence in the investigation and placed in the custody of Fort Worth Animal Care and Control.

According to the Harris' lawyer the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners will meet in Austin. Although a date hasn't been set, the case is being treated as an emergency.

Sid is home with the Harris family and being treated by other veterinarians. According to the Harrises' lawyer, doctors have determined he has mange, shows definite signs of being used for blood transfusions and shows evidence of being "abusively kenneled."

PHOTOS: 10,000 Bears Are Being Tortured for Their Bile in China

We’ve heard of the Indonesian death zoo where animals go to die, but this kind of farm is something we never knew existed.
Bile farms throughout Asia — in countries like China, North Korea, South Korea, Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar — keep Asiatic black bears in “extraction cages” where their bile (fluid produced by the liver that helps break down fatty foods) is then harvested to be used for homeopathic medicine.

According to ViralNova, in China alone there are 10,000 bears kept in bile farms. They’re kept in small cages, barely big enough for them to move in, also referred to as “crush cages.”
Bears’ bile is collected in three ways. The first is through tubes implanted through the abdomen and into the gall bladder.
The second, catheterization, involves putting a hollow steel tube through the bear’s abdomen.
The third is the “free drip” method, in which a permanent hole is made in the bear’s abdomen and gall bladder from which bile drips out freely.
Bile bears live to be about 5, while their wild counterparts live as long as 30 to 35 years.
