I had the pleasure of watching a rather large bald eagle flying around here the other day. While such sightings have become fairly common in recent years, I still get a kick out of each one I see.

These days I see one or two at least once a week or more. There's obviously a nesting pair somewhere nearby where I live, since they appear around the same place all the time.

This spring has been especially sweet for eagle spotting - not only have I seen the usual adults, there have also been at least two immature eagles swooping about alongside the road on many days on my drive home from work.

I keep a pouch of tobacco in the driver's side door pocket of my car. When conditions allow - as in, not driving with a white-knuckle grip on the steering wheel on icy roads - I pull out a pinch of tobacco and toss it out of the car window with a little prayer of greeting whenever I spot an eagle. Miigwech, Migizi!

"For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him."

Sound like anyone you know?
