I'm now a week without cigarettes, just an e-cig

This is why the anti-ecig crusade some seem to be on is so misguided. In the space of about six weeks, I've gone from 50 a day to 0, thanks to the e-cig. I'm going between three flavours of liquid, a tobacco, a cherry and a cinnamon.

Without the e-cig, I would still be smoking. With it, I've quit smoking with no real cravings. The slightly different sensation takes a few days to get used to and I haven't quite gotten up the courage to get rid of my tobacco yet (not least because tobacco is expensive so if I dump it, I'm out £50) but essentially, I've quit. And I keep hearing complaints about e-cigs having sweet flavours, like adults are only allowed to have "used ashtray", "boiled jockstrap" and "stale beer" flavours, all others are for kids.

This is why the crusade is so misguided. I'd been smoking for 25 years and I've been able to quit. My mother, who's been smoking for fifty years, is using e-cigs to quit. If you ban e-cigs or regulate them out of existence, we would still be smoking.

but I still don't think e-cigs should be sold to kids or glamourized in movies etc. to entice kids.
There are a whole lot of us that started smoking to emulate parents / movie stars back in the 50s and 60s.
Makes no sense to get get today's kids hooked on nicotine the same way.

but it is a lot less harmful than cigarettes.

Age regulations, absolutely. I don't know any e-cig user who's opposed to age restrictions. "Glamourised" is a case-by-case thing, same as cigarettes in movies. Sometimes, it makes sense for a character to smoke or vape (although I agree with keeping it out of kids movies and TV). What I think we need to be careful of is demonising e-cigs by presenting them (as some on DU do) as even worse than cigarettes.

That said, we have 18+ laws here (UK) and I would support every country adopting teh same rule.

version. As Shakespeare said "the purpose of playing whose end, both at the first and now, was and is to hold, as ’twere, the mirror up to nature, to show virtue her own feature, scorn her own image, and the very age and body of the time his form and pressure."
Arts that edit out the flaws of a society, the habitual behaviors both good and bad, are dead as arts and are reduced to mere social propaganda. If people do a thing in life, that thing belongs in cinema and other related arts. Period.

The problem (as I understand it) is that the concentration of nicotine that is in a vial of the substance you are putting in you e-cig could seriously injure or even kill a child if they were to swallow it. Also, the nicotine can be absorbed through the skin so even spilling it could present a health hazard.

Don't get me wrong; I am all in favor of the e-cig, but there ARE some issues that need to be looked at.

part of, all of, or more than one tobacco cigarette. That does not include kids under 5 those who sampled chewing tobacco, cigars, dissolvable tobacco, cigarette butts (74), other types of tobacco products (which don't include e-cigs, btw) snuff, and some unknown (forgot to mark a box)

(Those are just the ones reported. I suspect there are probably many more. In my experience, (which includes responding to hundreds of emergency calls) many caretakers and parents don't necessarily rush their kids to help after the adult has done something extraordinarily stupid.)

Anyway, I feel very safe in saying that regulations which prevent kids from purchasing cigarettes apparently had no impact on the infant poisoning cases.

In the same year, 84 exposures from e-cigs.

Zero deaths in any of those. (They quit ingesting them so much after 6, since they learn to use lighters and set shit on fire).

http://www.poison.org/stats/ (links to the stats at the top of this page)

There are two "reported" deaths from e-cig juice in 4 years, one an infant in Israel who was allowed to play with an e-cig and drank the contents, another fella who injected the e-juice.

You can't legislate stupid out of existence.

As a comparison, "Tobacco use is responsible for nearly 1 in 5 deaths; this equals about 480,000 early deaths each year. (Source: Cancer Facts & Figures 2014; and US Surgeon General Report 2014) "

So, over 4 years, 2 deaths for e-cigs vs almost 2 million for cigarettes. Cigarettes win.

Far more kids die from mommy and daddy's prescription pills, swimming pools, choking, and there are untold safeguards for those.

I'm all for truth in labeling, but any barrier that is placed in front of someone using or obtaining these far safer substitutes in light of the facts is like dancing on the graves of those that will die because of it. No difference between that and some TeaParty fascist wanting to remove things that support people when they need it.

But that's how people are. Because of the way we have developed, our minds replace the real threats with those that are less threatening, and then give them too much importance.

Funny people, us.

Being British, I'm covered by the NHS and it just baffles me that a modern country can still make healthcare dependent on cash.

I'll likely go the same way. I was on 24mg for most flavours but some only com in 18mg and I didn't notice much difference so on my next order, I'll probably just knock everything down to a uniform 18mg. Then, a few months later, knock it down to 12 and so on. Then I'd just be puffing flavoured steam because it tastes nice.

I've been tobacco-free for ONE MONTH (today)!

Seriously, congrats!! I know how hard it is, literally. I smoked from almost 29 years! I got as high as 2.5 packs a day for almost 15 years. I started using the vapor cigs and cut back to a pack and a few. Once I knocked out some of my triggers, I was able to fluctuate and I got a new way of vaping, that's when I really made progress.

Just a few notes, you can read as much as you want online about what happens next, but it really will depend on your body. I stopped coughing about 4 days later, then after a week of no coughing, it started back up, for almost two weeks now, but nothing like before. It is really subsiding now. I had days where I felt drained and just "down." This, apparently, is normal as well. The cravings....well, let's just say for a week I wanted to punch someone in the throat...anybody. Now, I get them every now and again, but it falls away quickly (usually).

Vaping made this possible for me, too.

I heard the legends/stereotypes/etc. about bad British food, but it is the vapor juice too?! Well, I must say, I am a bit interested in one of those flavors... LOL!

Good luck. Congrats! Stay strong!

When you are having an issue with a tank, and changing the atomizer doesn't work, it sucks to buy another tank. But overall, the cost is still lower.

Also, buy a box of surgical gloves to wear when you are swapping out parts and refilling.

Amidst the hullabaloo over imagined hazards, you don't want to swap an atomizer with your bare fingers, forget to wash your hands thoroughly, and then wipe your eye later.

Pretty scifi as far as cigs go, but I have not found anyone that has been hassled over using one like the above in public. Nor have I been stopped by LEO for using one. Most people know what they are and are eager to learn how it is going, what favors I use, etc.

Keep it charged and that one you have at home is just fine for public.

and unlike the cap in the gas stations and such actually deliver as promised. The nicotine will usually out last the battery and if you buy 10 they only run $3-4 bucks a piece, depending if there is a special.

I also suggest them for the hardest of the hard core smokers because they go up to an unbelievable 54mg of nicotine, powerful enough to beat even an unfiltered's punch. They can use those until they break the habit and then step down to a more reasonable but still extreme 36mg and then slide to more normal doses.

Ha! They do have a special, 10 for 29.99 http://www.whitecloudelectroniccigarettes.com/disposable-ecigarettes/

Check it out, might be your ticket.

I bought my ecig kit from Vapor Shark in Miami on January 5, and haven't had a cigarette since. Don't want one, don't crave one, and feel great.

I smoked at least 30 a day for over 45 years. I mean it's not like I didn't KNOW I should quit -- it's just a brutal habit to eliminate. So to psych myself up, I made it a game called "how long can I go without a cigarette?"

It's one of the best aids to emerge -- satisfies the hand-to-mouth and warm hit on the back of the throat -- and produces no obnoxious smoke. My husband is a confirmed non-smoker and he can't even smell it.

Keep it up!

I always enjoyed the sensation of smoking but in time, I'll likely taper off the nicotine content until I'm just puffing flavoured steam.

Right now, I'm on either a 24mg or an 18mg. I'd prefer 24 because I was a pretty heavy smoker but some flavours are only available in 18 and I'm not noticing much difference so my next order, I'll probably just knock everything down to a uniform 18mg.

I am sure you will find a way to achieve what you are after. Good Luck.

I was desperate to spend public and public outdoor time with my grandchildren and not have to run off somewhere and smoke.

I, also, didn't want them to ever remember me smoking and since I was their guardian at the time, I would step
outside to smoke, which meant shutting the door as they came toddling after me. Sometimes they
would stand behind the door crying for me.

California was great about putting rules and regulations against smoking that made sense. And when I saw friends and
acquaintances quitting I knew it had to happen for me, too.

I just quit, cold turkey as they say, almost 11 years ago. I have saved a lot of money over those years. I guess
that should have been the impetuous in itself to quit but it was a reward for me after the fact.

I'm actually using a combination of the Blu e-cig battery with the Incredi-Pen atomizers. It works great and is nice and small so it's easy to carry around..

My company shot a Blu commercial and I got them for free. They weren't satisfying though. With the Incredi-pen atomizers it works much better and is way cheaper than the Blu cartridges.

Ignore the nay-sayers. I feel better, I'm breathing better, and I am saving a shitload of money.

As far as the e-juice goes I am finding it to be hit or miss. I work on the road so it's not always easy to find what I like. At home the store near me sells a brand called Voodoo e-juice. So far I have found those to be the best tasting..

about 40% of the population in 1960 to 15% for about the past 10 or so years, a number we appear to have plateaued at. That last 15% are very likely the harder core addicts, the hardest ones to move.

And that's why the New England Journal of Medicine wrote that in the circumstance where smokers have tried multiple times to quit without success (which describes tens of millions of people for whom patches, gum, etc don't work) suggest that the physician make the patient aware of vaping and the benefit to that safer substitute.

You are doing exactly the right thing. You mentioned money, but don't let that dissuade you. Most people who try these try several devices before they settle on what they like, and that is very likely to be more than one device. With a battery and atomizer top at less than $50US, and 2-3 bottles of fluid at $10 to $20 each you might still only be out $100 for the month, vs 300, and even less the next, but most people want or need to try other things. Still, if you had been spending $300 a month for cigarettes, that leaves a lot of room for experimentation, and it will be cheaper.

fyi - I started with e-cigs and they didn't do much, and the vaping pipe didn't either. Found a little shop whose mission is to get people off tobacco cigs, and they sold me 36/mg ml nicotine e-juice - a light tobacco flavor, as I recall.

Once I had that I set my cigs down and forgot them. Had not been without them in 42 years and I realized I had not put them in my pocket for 3 days. And that was because they got the nicotine concentration high enough to overcome what I was doing.

Now I am down in the 8-12-16 range, and will probably go to 0 with just some vegetable glycerine, water, and scent at some point, just 'cause I enjoy it.

If you have questions, there are lot of people here, and there is a site at http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ with a lot of helpful info.

Thu May 1, 2014, 04:27 PM
May 2014

My flavor is peppermint. I tried peach (blah) and cinnamon (deadened all feeling and taste in my mouth). Since I'm practically addicted to Altoids, strong mint is natural for me.

I started with 16/18 mg strength (depending on where I got the vape juice), now I'm at 12. In a few months or so, I will drop the strength down a level again.

I gave my last few packs of tobacco cigarettes to my father-in-law.

I haven't missed tobacco at all. My sense of smell has got better. When I go to a place where smoking is the norm (a casino - I live in Las Vegas), the smell of stale tobacco isn't very pleasant, but it's tolerable.

The anti-vaping crusade is insane. Those idjits seem to want to control people, not do any real good.

Congrats!

And I love my "puffer", as I call it.
I have the Kanger tech brand with the larger battery and the low ohm filament. I get a good draw and I can fog up the inside of my car. I don't miss cigs at all, but I'm really enjoying puffing without having to excuse myself to the outdoors. Smoking is not allowed on my jobsite, and when I started puffing on the job i got a little flack for it. Once I explained that it wasn't smoke but fog they still bucked but I continue to puff on the job without much static anymore. The more people get educated in these things and the more they see that it helps smokers quit I think the puffers will be more readily accepted in public places. And I enjoy it immensely.

Keep up the good fight Prophet 451.

Mon May 5, 2014, 12:45 AM
May 2014

Every time I went to the doctors, flues, pregnancies, shots, whatever, they always told me how clear my lungs were and couldn't figure it out.

I attribute it to the relaxation and pleasure I got from smoking.

I just got tired of being treated like a criminal, being made to go outside like a dog that has to pee, and people who were overcome with coughing spells when they passed a group of smokers. Then there were the grandchildren. I never smoked in the same room as my kids, went to the bathroom, provided a place for them to watch TV, and waited till they went to bed and smoked like a chimney. They were never sick and had perfect attendance except once. And, then the cost was too high after some laws were passed in Michigan - no more ordering tax-free cartons from Indian reservation, and smoking was dirty.

When I do pass a smoker outside a store, I always say something pleasant to them because I know how they are made to feel like dirt by nonsmokers. Usually something like, "I used to smoke, and enjoyed it immensely, but my time came to quit. Your time will come, so enjoy till then."

I look at their smoker eyes, and I hope they see love in mine..

Besides eliminating the carcinogens and the stink and 2nd hand smoke, I can now moderate my nicotine intake. When you fire up a stinky, you are more or less committed to smoking the entire thing. With an ecig, I can take a single hit whenever I want, like at the poker table.
