Janice Hahn Walks Out Of Event After James Dobson Calls Obama The 'Abortion President'
Posted: 05/01/2014 5:17 pm EDT Updated: 05/01/2014 5:59 pm EDT

Rep. Janice Hahn (D-Calif.) walked out of the National Day of Prayer event at the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, saying she was "outraged" after James Dobson, founder of the conservative Christian advocacy group Focus on the Family, called President Barack Obama the “abortion president.”

“President Obama, before he was elected, made it very clear that he wanted to be the abortion president. He didn’t make any bones about it," Dobson, whose organization recently won a temporary injunction against the Affordable Care Act’s employer contraception mandate, said on Thursday. "This is something that he really was going to promote and support, and he has done that, and in a sense he is the abortion president."

In an interview with The Huffington Post on Thursday, Hahn called the speech deeply "inappropriate" and a violation of the event's symbol as a nonpartisan day of unity.

“He goes on about health care and … providing abortions, and at that point I stood up and I pointed my finger at Dr. Dobson and I said, ‘This is inappropriate!’ and walked out,” Hahn told HuffPost.

“Dobson just blew a hole into this idea of being a nonpartisan National Day of Prayer. It was very disturbing to me … and really a shame,” Hahn, the co-chair of the weekly congressional prayer breakfast, added. “James Dobson hijacked the National Day of Prayer -- this nonpartisan, nonpolitical National Day of Prayer -- to promote his own distorted political agenda.”

like the National Day of Prayer and all those prayer breakfasts. This is supposed to be a secular government - if people want to pray on their own time I don't care, but there shouldn't be official events whose purpose is to pray, any kind of prayers. Just stop it. Dobson's remarks are the natural consequence of these things.

It has ALWAYS rubbed me the wrong way...and this was before I became an atheist...the prayer breakfasts, the daily prayer in the house and the senate are ALL out of order in a secular government...

the National Day of Prayer task force. There is nothing non-partisan about the NDP. The materials of the NDP task force are always predicated on right-wing evangelical presuppositions.

hate? What the fuck did she expect from James Dobson? Why would she think that this display somehow mitigates her involvement in this abomination?
I am so sick of politicians who endorse these bigots. It has to stop. This is like a 'Prayer Breakfast With Cliven Bundy'.
Hahn is a huge disappointment, as are all the participants in this yearly indulgence in self important hypocrisy by a bunch of bigoted people calling themselves Christians. Every year, their speakers is some anti gay freak.
To me, this is the same as a KKK meeting, and Hahn is one of the organizers, I think.

This day means something to some people; others, including myself, not so much.

How can obama be the abortion president? It only gets harder every year to get an abortion. states are putting in absurd restrictions like forcing the transvaginal ultrasound. i believe mississippi is about to shut down its only clinic....... calling obama the abortion president is like calling bush the enemy of big oil
