No one seems to know how many Nigerian girls are actually missing, 53 escaped

The number of girls and young women who are reported missing after being taken from a school in northeastern Nigeria continues to climb.

Police said that the number of girls missing is up to 276 and that more than 300 were abducted April 14, the Associated Press reports. Fifty-three have escaped, they said.

The original estimate was that about 100 girls were kidnapped. Then, on April 16, the military reported that all but eight were freed, the AP says.

On April 17, that statement was retracted, and the school's principal said 129 were missing, and 14 had been returned. On the 18th, Nigerian authorities said that 85 were still missing and that 24 had escaped, for a total of 109.

On April 21, parents said 234 were still missing, Reuters said, while officials said 77 were still missing and 52 had been accounted for, for 129 total kidnapped. A day later, parents gave a visiting governor a list of 234 missing, and the principal told the AP that 230 were missing and 43 accounted for.

It sounds like the pretty ones were forced into "marriage" with their kidnappers. The plain ones are being sold as domestic slaves across the border to fund more terrorism, especially against girls who have the audacity to want to learn how to read and write.

8. Every single thread about this story on DU has dropped like a stone

People like to rail against misogyny and the oppression against women and girls but when confronted with a real life cultural tragedy - REAL rape culture - its crickets.

I believe its because of DU's natural antipathy towards criticizing anything to do with Islam, and DU's vocal and oppressive cultural relativists who immediately go into overdrive slamming any poster who criticizes abhorrent foreign cultural practices. Many DUers have learned to stay away from threads like this.

14. I'm speechlees

I have signed and I read the posts and rec them, but every time, I literally start crying for these girls. What can I say that would make any difference? I hope for them; I hope they are returned to their families safely. But I cannot imagine what they have gone through and what the scars must be. And when you hear about people so heartless, all of a sudden, the universe seems very cold and cruel.

there would be an international manhunt. The news would cover it 24/7.

The Nigerian government is pathetic. They don't know how many were kidnapped, can't locate them, can't rescue them. Basically they're doing nothing. Nigerians should stop paying taxes until these girls are rescued. The tax money probably ends up in Swiss bank accounts anyway.

9. There was a million woman march in Nigeria yesterday. The women there are pushing back against

the indifference of the government to launch a full out search for these young women.

And yes, there needs to be an international effort to apply pressure and give help where it can help to find them.

I don't know why there isn't more outrage....
