More and more cities and local municipalities across the country have begun passing amendments to their anti-discrimination ordinances to grant protections to LGBT persons who otherwise can be denied employment, housing, even bank loans based solely on their sexual and gender preferences. And in most instances, even the slightest hint of these ordinances brings the Bible-thumping crazies out of the woodwork like a bad roach infestation.
Such was the case in my own city where such a measure has been indefinitely tabled (swept under the rug) after religious bigots filled city council meetings like a swarm of locust to tell us how an anti-discrimination ordinance that includes LGBT persons would close business and bring crime, disease, and sin to our city (did I mention I live in the buckle of Bible belt?).
Shreveport, Louisiana is one of the latest cities to pass an LGBT anti-discrimination ordinancein fact it passed overwhelmingly by a vote of 6-1but not without some religious bigotry thrown in by Councilman Ron Webb, who of course cast the lone opposing vote on the basis that The Bible tells you homosexuals are an abomination. Webb also made sure to add that he does not socialize with homosexuals, as if anyone could possibly have any doubts.
But of course Webb did not stop there. He promptly introduced a measure to repeal the ordinance, and thats where Pamela Raintree comes into the picture. In a nutshell, Pamela Raintree, who is a transgender woman and obviously someone who is personally affected by this ordinance, gave Webb a metaphorical Bible-thumping of her own, complete with an actual stone.

(111,222 posts)although I do know a few lefties in the area. I'm delighted so many people there have actually read their New Testament enough to know homophobia and discrimination make Jesus cry.
Here, we got marriage equality in a few cities last August. It was met with a yawn and only subdued grumbling from a few pulpits and now it's statewide. That was also met with a yawn.
The greatest ally marriage equality has is time. The longer states with marriage equality stay stable without men stampeding to divorce their wives so they can marry each other, the more people get the point that absolutely nothing will change except life partners being able to visit each other in an ICU.
