A New York City cyclist was arrested, while attempting to film a police officer giving him a ticket for running a red light, with the explanation that iPhones are being used as guns, according to The Gothamist.
Will Paybarah,24, of Brooklyn, was stopped by a police officer in late March for admittedly running a red light while on his bike. As the officer approached him, Paybarah pulled out his cellphone to film the encounter only to have the officer immediately tell him to put his phone away.
According to Paybarah, When I tried to record my interaction with the officer I was arrested
in 10 seconds flat.

I was told by another officer while in the car that recording a police officer was illegal because people are using iPhones as guns and shooting cops through the camera lens
I told him that I have the right to be recording a cop and he said that there were incidents, specifically in uptown Manhattan where a kid shot a cop with his iPhone. Straight face. Very serious.

(3,891 posts)Yes there are cell phone guns. No they are not disguised to look like iphones. No, they don't fire out of the lens. The only thing coming out of the lens is the danger of being exposed as a liar and a member of the brute squad. Hell, the projectile on a .22 would be wider than the phone is thick. I want to ban guns, but this doesn't help, lying never does.

I spotted 'cell phone tasers' in a quick search, but not smart phone guns.

Won't be long before the cops are claiming that shoes, belts, and flashlights are outlawed because....

I thought cops were supposed to know about guns. At the very least, the officer in question should be terminated because of his incredible ignorance of what guns can be and how small the cartridge is. apparently he thinks, minuscule.

(14,733 posts)I refuse to believe anyone has converted a smartphone into a gun until I actually see one, and a legitimate news story that shows any cop anywhere has been shot with a smartphone.
That cop sounds like either the stupidest person in the world, or like he believes that the guy getting arrested was the stupidest person ever.

(2,543 posts)Every cop needs to understand that they work for the public! They are not a foreign occupation force. Once cops lose they confidence of the public, they are hosed. If people feel endangered by these criminals with badges, cops jobs will become harder and MUCH more dangerous. Every time you see a cop interacting with a citizen...record it! It's hard to believe that cops think fixed surveillance cameras are not recording what they are doing, and more effectively too. If you are abused by a cop, check to see if there are any surveillance systems in the area, there probably are, and most of them retain data for awhile.
In Milwaukee a woman was accused of crashing into a squad car. Arrested and charged with multiple counts she was sent a bill to pay for the damages. Turns out, two years later, surveillance footage concealed by the police dept shows that what happened was the squad car ran a stop sign and t-boned her. This incident is not an anomaly for the Milwaukee PD, they are famous for this kinda crap. And now it turns out the Milwaukee PD chief may be a"militia" type, big surprise there.
