"I would like to remind you that this is Novorossiya - the term used back in the tsarist epoch. Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, Odessa were not part of Ukraine in the tsarist epoch. These are the territories which were turned over to Ukraine by the former Soviet government in the 1920s. God knows what they did that for.
All this dates back to the victories won by tsarist Russia in notorious wars in the epoch of Catherine the Great and Prince Potyomkin with the center in Novorossiysk; hence the name- Novorossiya. Then for different reasons these territories were lost, but the people remained."
Vladimir Putin, April 17, 2014
Now, why on earth would Vladimir Putin throw this into his talk seemingly at random? Did he suddenly think he was a Russian high school history teacher?
This has been Putin's M.O. all along. It's the same thing that we saw with Crimea--just reuniting the old Russian empire. Anyone who doesn't think Russia is currently involved with the armed militants in Eastern Ukraine is either in serious denial, or is being deliberately deceitful.

(267,793 posts)Who told the US that it is in charge of this planet.
I remain part of the non-aligned movement and nothing you say changes the fact that the US is behaving like a school yard bully across the planet. What makes it worse is the pretense that they did not finance all the so called non-governmental organizations.
Maybe Mrs Nuland can explain the way she did when she said Fuck the EU as she sided with the neo-fascists.

(95,237 posts)Russia has no more call to dictate internal and economic structures in Ukraine than the U.S. has to do in Mexico or Venezuela.

Hoo-kay.
The U.S. does not lay some historical claim to Ukraine. Russia does, and it's showing.

I heard the exact same conspiratorial crap in high school, it's just the name of one of the actors that was different.

(13,340 posts)But since WWII, they've generally looked to the US for leadership. And if they WON'T stand up to Putin becuase they are afraid of economic damage, somebody has to.
Nothing would make me happier than, say, Germany taking the lead. And to a certain extent they are. But not as strongly as called for, IMO.

(13,340 posts)For one thing, the "isolation" has been largely symbolic so far
For another, Russia is probably already in recession. They can't afford even a modest hit to their economy.
Putin has overplayed hand, and I think that perhaps now, he's beginning to realize it.
