Moronic GOPer Calls Melissa Harris-Perry A Dirty Ape

by Jo Ann Brown
May 7, 2014

Dehumanization of people is a fundamental characteristic of any “Ism.” In the case of racism, it’s a well-known fact that people of African descent have historically been associated with monkeys or apes; hence, the uproar that Jim Coughlan’s fiery tweet referring to Melissa Harris-Perry as an ape was racist.

Melissa Harris-Perry made an ad in which she made reference to the need for communities, not just parents, to take responsibility for the well-being of children.

“We have never invested as much in public education as we should have because we’ve always had kind of a private notion of children: ‘Your kid is yours, and totally your responsibility,’” Harris-Perry says in the ad that remains controversial among conservatives.

“We have to break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents, or kids belong to their families, and recognize that kids belong to whole communities,” she adds.

This prompted Jim Coughlan, a Republican who is also eyeing a State Senate seat to tweet Harris-Perry: “Unless you’re my wife don’t call them ‘our’ children. Keep your stinking paws off my kid, you damned dirty ape.”

That is Charlton Heston line in Planet of the Apes. The guy can't even come up with an original bit of racism. On a serious note it amazes me that many people on the right refuse to see this kind of statement for what it really is. Hate speech.

That's like responding to someone with a quote from Lord of the Rings.

Remember when they got killed in the 2012 election? They promised to improve their outreach efforts to minorities and women.

This is simply a continuation of those efforts.

"Isn't Ms. Harris-Perry's mother white?"

they'd at least be less harsh on a bi-racial person, but as we've seen with her, Obama, and others, the one-drop rule is paramount when we're talking about the RW bigots.

Conservatives are stupid people which means that they lack a sense of humor. This idiot is simply too stupid to understand that his "joke" was racist and not funny. Conservatives are simply too stupid to attempt to do humor or to tell jokes.
