Behold: The state Senate yogurt debate of 2014

Albany Times-Union:

What were you doing last night roughly from 6 to 7 p.m.? Having dinner? Playing with your children? Cleaning your SAFE-compliant assault-style rifle? Losers! You could have been watching the livecast of the state Senate’s debate on a bill put forth by Republican Mike Ranzenhofer that declares yogurt to be the official state snack.

Sharpening their elbows, Democrats kept debate going for more than 40 minutes, peppering Ranzenhofer — who had taken up the bill after a group of fourth graders had come to him with the idea — with questions, including: Had he considered alternatives such as raisins, pretzels, or the mighty hot dog? What about the lactose-intolerant? Would the designation encourage children to eat yogurt with too much sugar? And can something be a snack if you eat it mainly at breakfast?

“It tells me that we don’t have bigger things to do,” said Democrat Ruben Diaz Sr., referring to the length of the debate. ” … This is an honor, to be part of this great working body.”

The action begins around the 2:24:00 mark:

Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon the choice of snack.
