(6,199 posts)Pat Bagley is the editorial cartoonist for the Salt Lake Tribune, the independent paper which is right now being run out of business by the LDS Church in favor of their church-owned mouthpiece, Deseret News. Utah, not to mention Bagley who is among the best of the political cartoonists, could use a little DU help here, if anyone's interested.

(2,949 posts)I appreciate the effort you put into this. I signed the petition last week, but the Church has so much power I fear it is hopeless.
Perhaps you should make this issue its own OP. The Trib needs all the help it can get.

I have never been so disgusted with the LDS Church as I am over this underhanded and pathetic subversion of the independent voice of Utah for 140 years. Please sign the petition posted by LadyHawkAZ and When Mormon missionaries come knocking on your door, tell them to fuck off in the name of the Salt Lake Tribune! They are working for a corrupt and evil tax exempt religious cult that is trying to steal your money!

(32,018 posts)In America, there is a Boko Haram, "religious extremists opposed to education".
Except they don't kidnap children by force.
They take action politically. Just look at the Texas Board of Education's actions within the past few years as an example.

(32,324 posts)A region with teachers, supplies, etc, I'd say that every American has been negatively affected by
our Fed Government's insidious budget, as its operations are so often controlled by extremists, and its six trillions of dollars in illegal wars, the endless monies for surveillance, the continuing move to get us involved in more wars (With some Hawks saying, "Why not go 'limited Nukes against Iran?' "
Meanwhile the art and music classes are a thing of the past in America's public schools. Our roads and railway tracks are in deplorable condition, and the whole infra structure is sinking.

(8,554 posts)that even ignorant extremists know that women's equality is essential to changing a society. Horrific events like this prove that they are really scared. The gutless cowards can't face change for the better so they attack children. Unfortunately, the far right in this country isn't much better. They may not resort to murder and kidnapping children but they're just as frightened, as evidenced by all the attempts to roll back women's rights.

(81,220 posts)Glad you're here! What you said. Every word. Those who don't want to recognize reality in the 21st Century ARE afraid. Threatened. Guess they're so low in their own self-assessment that the only way they can start standing tall is to knock down those around them, especially those who seem like easy targets - the young, the small, the female. Maybe they're threatened because women control the life-giving? Maybe they feel so vulnerable themselves that the only way they can think of to remedy that is to suppress and belittle and forcibly dominate those around them, especially the female? I do not understand it. I've spent a lot of time thinking about it and none of it make sense to me. I keep coming back to those pseudo-"macho" weenies with their big guns and ammo and their strutting around in front of the cameras like they're starring in some dick parade, and to show what big strong macho he-men they are, they go sneak around in the dark of night and snatch away little girls. Gee... Mongo impressed - NOT!!!!!!

(15,774 posts)the entire indecent in Nigeria sends chills across my heart. Society does not value girls or women or their contributions. This incident only brings in to heightened relief the misogynistic nature of religious culture.
Selling these poor innocent girls into slavery, sex slaves and laughing about it. I hope all of Boka Haram are captured and justice is served. I won't say what my idea of justice is but I hope the parents get their daughters back safely and they get some justice.
Allah tells me to sell them into slave my ass.

(14,173 posts)Having just watched another episode of Game of Thrones, I'd love to see Daenerys and her dragons swoop in and give the slave trading assholes some Valyrian justice.
But failing that...I wish one or more world leaders, including Obama, would have the cohones to just give an executive order, send in a few hundred top dog special forces marines and surround and take out this group and free these girls. Political cost be damned. You know Fox and the GOP would be screaming hysterically 24/7. Mostly for reasons they couldn't admit...ie. their corporate masters hate military resources being used other than to enrich themselves with new resources to plunder. But if it was successful they'd look like cold hearted idiots for criticizing it earlier.
Nigeria has already invited the US, but even if they haven't allowed that level of intrusion, hasn't the US already given up all pretense of honouring sovereignty if taking out a target in any foreign country is in the US's "best interest"?
Maybe Obama and the Dems are still hesitant because of Clinton's failed Somalia adventure.

(81,220 posts)I watched the coverage of this horror and it just made me ANGRY!!! As a woman, it really infuriated me. I cannot believe what my gender has had to put up with - through the ages!!! I cannot believe how women have been preyed upon! Across the freakin' PLANET!!! Across the centuries - no, make that millennia! I cannot believe how women have been victimized, minimized, trivialized, objectified, used, regarded as mere property, regarded as no better or more valuable than a brood mare in the stable out back. We are regarded as, and treated as second-class citizens and it's just an OUTRAGE!!! In too many cultures, we are, and have been, regarded as just another commodity to be bought, sold, and traded! And DAMMIT, we're HUMAN BEINGS!!!! WE. ARE. EQUAL. With FULL RIGHTS AND ENTITLEMENTS, DAMMIT! Our place is standing BESIDE men, not behind them, not subservient to them, not less than them. Frankly, some women I know are FAR MORE than most men. I, for one, will NOT be minimized, taken for granted, or used for somebody else's agenda. My husband, thank God, is a fully liberated man and sees neither me nor our daughter as property or as brood mares. Too bad all men aren't like him. Women deserve much better! We are the children of a lesser God, somehow. And I WON'T HAVE IT!!!! When is this gonna stop and when is our species gonna GROW UP, forcryingoutloud???
It's a fucking OUTRAGE!!! This is the TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY forcryingoutloud!!! W.T.F.!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?
