With web sites that have that "autoplay" ad feature.
Huffington Post, and now Cracked.com do this, it causes everything to freeze up, and then when the video on autoplay DOES start, it plays erratically, starting and stopping at random.

If they want to advertise on the net, it should be nice well-behaved banners.

(30,947 posts)I have been thinking it was my computer. Sometimes my computer freezes up, and I have to force quit and then restart it.

(3,596 posts)I would completely agree it needs to not cause your computer to freeze up or not respond to user commands.
On the other hand their content is being made available to you at no charge. Their only way to pay for the content is by luring advertisers. I suspect advertisers are becoming more demanding about ensuring visitors to the website actually see their ad.
It is completely annoying but I guess I have accepted it as the price for access to free content. I have to listen to the ads on my car radio and on my commercial television shows so I have accepted this.
But they need to be sure that it doesn't take control/lock up your computer or make it so you cannot use the mute or stop buttons. That would be akin to an advertiser disabling the ability to change the radio or tv station or mute your radio or tv.

(25,917 posts)You have to do an extra click when you want to play videos, but at least you don't have video ads automatically starting and slowing down or screwing up webpages.

adblock plus. Configure flashblock to block html5 and silverlight as well. Noscript also gets rid of most of it. These are addons for Firefox.

(490 posts)I make sure to send them an email telling them why. It's too bad really. HuffPo I could do without but I really liked Cracked when I needed to take a break.
