Petition - Demand a Moratorium on Executions in Florida
The botched lethal injection in Oklahoma has shocked the country into reassessing the cruelty of lethal injections. But in Florida - the state that leads the country in number of people exonerated from death row - state officials recently started using a similar combination of chemicals that created the horrific situation in Oklahoma.
Oklahoma has put a hold on executions, and in 2006, then-Governor Jeb Bush ordered a moratorium on lethal injections in Florida after a similarly botched execution. But in spite of this, Florida is continuing its death penalty system. The secrecy and lack of transparency that has surrounded the situation in Oklahoma, combined with Florida's own troubled history with the death penalty and the fact that the state is using similar drugs as those used in Oklahoma, means the danger of something going horribly wrong is too high to let executions continue.
