The Federal Communications Commission would rather read your thoughts about net neutrality than hear about them. Columbia Law School professor and leading net neutrality activist Tim Wu points out that calling the FCCs main consumer hotline will give you a message that asks you to write an email to the commission if youre calling about FCC chairman Tom Wheelers controversial net neutrality plans. This seemingly indicates that either the FCC is being flooded with calls about net neutrality that its operators cant handle them all or it just is tired of hearing everyone call about net neutrality and would like to see them send emails instead. Either way, it looks as though people are speaking up about the issue.
This week has been a very bad one for Wheelers proposal that would create Internet fast lanes that would let Internet service providers charge companies more to ensure faster traffic delivery. Several big-name tech companies this week including Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon and Netflix wrote a joint letter to the FCC telling it to back off any plan that would create a two-tiered Internet and instead urged it to adopt policies that would not only protect against blocking of websites but also the Internets traditional architecture where all packets are delivered on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Whats more, two FCC commissioners have come out and said that they want to delay voting on Wheelers proposal, which is scheduled to take place at an FCC meeting on May 15th. However, with at least two commissioners seeking to delay the vote and expressing opposition to parts of Wheelers plan, it remains unclear whether Wheeler will even have the votes to get his plan passed even if he decides not to table it.

Note: You will be filing a document into an official FCC proceeding. All information submitted, including names and addresses, will be publicly available via the web.

(19,537 posts)Already many can be billed more for this if you're in a bad cell area and need to use an internet repeater with your internet service to allow you to make reasonable cell phone calls. Anyway, they now can probably have companies that are offering you internet service to suddenly slow down or ask for more money to make cell calls to the FCC!

The murder of net neutrality....
You couldn't say the crime is being committed by stealth. Quite the contrary: Tom Wheeler, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, is aiming to slay net neutrality in broad daylight. The murder weapon is a proposal to allow Internet service providers to charge content companies more for faster access to their subscribers.
Wheeler's proposal, which is scheduled for a preliminary vote by the full FCC on May 15, has been assailed as a full-scale retreat from the open-Internet principle traditionally upheld by the commission, and explicitly supported by President Obama. Wheeler claims he's not backing away from net neutrality at all, and that assertions to the contrary are the product of "a great deal of misinformation."
He's blowing smoke. The critics are right. Wheeler's proposal will turn the Internet as we know it into the private preserve of a handful of rich and powerful companies. It will make them richer and more powerful. And you'll be getting the bill. If the commission votes for the proposal, it will then be subject to months of public comments. But the risk is it could become law by the end of this year.
Obama's choice, up to other Democrats to stand against it or not.

(50,983 posts)imagine that it is part of their job description to do the will of corporate America at the expense of the American people. They are mistaken. They would compromise our democracy in the name of profit for a few. That is the wrong side of history. Mr. President, WTF?

With the new rules, email is on the internet slow-lane.
Call them, fax them, stop them in their tracks.
