In which case, I'll ask for a transfer for all my animal kids

(22,165 posts)It is my very favorite episode
The Plot: She calls him "Old Man" and he calls her "Old Woman." They are Hyder (Arthur Hunnicutt) and Rachel (Jeanette Nolan) by given name, a loving couple, married for more than 50 years, and sharing a basic but comfortable little house in a rural area. He's determined to go coon hunting one night with his hound dog Rip, despite the old lady's superstitious fears.
While hunting, Rip jumps into a river after his prey, and the old man jumps in to rescue him. They don't surface for a long time. In the morning, they awaken and head home. They come across two men digging a ditch on his property, but they don't seem to be able to hear Hyder when he speaks to them. Either that, or they're ignoring him. After that strange encounter, they mosey along home, only to find Rachel in tears, dressed in black.
Soon enough, it's explained to Hyder that he and his dog have died, and it is time to mosey along to their new place of abode.

(23,156 posts)a lot of people have owned multiple pets over the years. I'm not sure I'd totally want to be met by all of them myself. Just think, your entire time in the afterlife taken up walking all those dogs, or cleaning out all those litter boxes. Oh, no!

(15,411 posts)hear me out...
we've always had dogs. Can't even count how many. There are a few I would love to see again but there are some I don't want to take care of for eternity.
So, there I'll be with a 2-3 dozen dogs and half that many cats. Not my idea of heaven.
The other two reasons: How many generations of my family will I have to put up with on Thanksgiving? 3? 8? 56?
And the third reason? I'll have no excuse not to learn French and the piano. Neither one of which I was any good at in this life but both of which I'd love to learn "but I don't have time". That excuse if shot to hell.
Eternity is a long time. Think about it. Spending all of it all those dogs and cats. Glad I'm not a believer.

(7,499 posts)Big tears here. I lost my beloved "Boo Bear" December 10th of December 2012, and still miss him like crazy. He was a twelve and a half year old bichon, and the sweetest, kindest, gentlest little guy in the world. He showed me more love and devotion than most of the people in my life. I have always had dogs, but he was something really, really special. As Will Rogers said, "If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went".
Prophet 451
(9,796 posts)...that if heaven didn't have her dogs, it wouldn't be heaven.
I'm a believer myself and I hope that, when I reach the afterlife, all our cats that have preceded me will be there to meet me. Jelli, the half-blind feral stray that we took in when she started hanging around our backyard. She'd take your hand off if it got too close but would climb into my arms for a cuddle. Mac, dumped on our doorstep as a kitten, he never really grew up. Even when a heart complaint took him at two and a half, he was still a boisterous kitten. Suki, the crotchety old lady and her brother, the incredibly sweet-natured Sandy, would hopefully find time to come and visit (we were their second owners after the first passed away).
My cats have saved my life many times. Suffering from mental illness, they have often been what saved me from suicide. If there is an afterlife worth having, I shall climb into a big comfy chair in front of a fire and spend my eternity playing with my beloved cats.
I miss my Keisha.
I look forward to the day when I'll be able to adopt another dog.
