(154,021 posts)yes, there are times they DO NOT want to step off.
I am glad they do not "speak" English, but you can tell when they are pissed. That was not an act.

(154,021 posts)They actually get time outs, like the little three year olds going on five they are (one if close to 25 the other is going on 16)
And they do.
And now I am going to wonder if they are swearing at me in Nanday and Sun Conure respectively. They get that vocal (though they never quite learned human speech. Conures are not that "gifted."

(154,021 posts)but they do not just replicate human speech. That bird was not going to step on that finger, no way, no how... the way the crest was going, that was not an act. I wonder at the size of the bird's pupils. IF they are huge, bird is getting ready to not so gently nibble on your finger.

(154,021 posts)One reason we discounted having one, EVER.
Mind you, all parrots are very young babies, but Cockatoos take the needy, love me, jealousy to a whole new level. And to boot they live well beyond most average human parents.
The San Diego Zoo had one that died at... they think, 109, when care takers retired, or died, especially the latter, bird was taken to funerals.
We have two conures, and the younger one has a tad of jealousy with her older brother when Cookie decides to come on my shoulder. But nothing like that.

(39,961 posts)He was insanely jealous of anyone but me being around me, and preened constantly when he was with me. He was a sweetie pie named Spencer. He was absolutely obnoxious to anyone that wasn't me, despite my attempts to make him feel comfortable around others. The only other creature he put up with, was surprisingly, the Maine Coon cat that weighed 20+ pounds and could have eaten him in a second, but was as gentle as a lamb around him.
Go figure.

I especially like the part at about the 1:30 mark. The bird seems to be shouting "You never listen to me! You don't care what I have to say!"

Bed time, cookie got argumentative, as he sometimes gets. I think running this video while they were still awake was not a good idea.

(35,961 posts)I'd like to blame the clip, but that's their normal routine, plus seeing they're wild, they're not really mine. But those fucking sulphur crested cockatoos own my balcony and they're loud about their ownership. They're probably living proof that it takes a lot of repetition for cockatoos to pick up human speech, coz for the amount of times I've yelled at them to fuck off, they still haven't repeated it back at me yet...

(39,961 posts)I went to a park in Winter Haven FL, and had about 12 lorikeets sitting on me. I didn't even have any food and nobody in the group garnered even the attention of one of them. Come on, a Great Horned Owl and I exchanged hoots for several nights. Wrens built nests (despite my having a cat) in the eaves and lived to tell about it, and one landed on my shoulder when the were flying away.
I adore cats. I also absolutely adore birds.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,365 posts)Though I've never owned one (my dad wouldn't have it) I had many friends who had aviaries of various sizes growing up and one who had a Blue and Gold Macaw.
I absolutely understand the appeal. They can be comedians, no doubt.
Speaking of the Owl, I live in Jacksonville and can hear owls almost every night. I had a Great Horned fly right over my head on my back porch earlier in the year. There are scores of them in this area. Lots of other raptors as well. My brother has a place in Lee County, in SW Fl and has Swallow Tailed Kites that nest on his property each year.
I am glad this thread has been as well received as it has. DU and GD in particular can be very hit and miss.
I thought it could use a good chuckle.

(39,961 posts)Since you live in Jacksonville, let me ask you if you have experienced the PLAGUE OF FROGS. The little bitty ones that totally take over the entire area.
I remember that clearly from living there as a child. I got some of the best samples of grasshoppers when I was about 9, but then there was a flood, and a PLAGUE of those tiny frogs so bad you couldn't even take a step without a bunch of them being there.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,365 posts)I've been working here since Sept of 2011 and renting this house on a tributary/creek to the St. Johns since November of 12. Had some good sized grasshopper last summer but not an excessive number of frogs. Just your regular number of the little green tree frogs. You can certainly hear plenty of them at night, however.
I put up a thread about some Manatees in the waterway behind my house last year;

I live about 5 miles as the crow flies from downtown, but this is a VERY cool little cul-de-sac. Owls, and other raptors abound, lots of lizards and anoles, Raccoons, Possums and my neighbor spotted a Coyote!
A little too urban for deer, but they aren't far away. A quick 6 or 7 minute drive and I am in the countryside.

(154,021 posts)I spent a wonderful Sunday going over energy projects in San Diego, go ahead, ask what you want to know. As long as it involves wood to steel replacement poles...
After I get that article mostly hammered, I am about to know more than needed about the Sempra Energy wind project in Baja (yup, literally same EIR crap, different language) so at one point I felt like screaming like a certain bird...laughing is good for the soul.
Looking for one particular thing that has little to do with the project itself, but all to do with money laundering charges in Mexico City and very local politics. Oy.

(19,768 posts)Was that stressing the bird emotionally for bored kicks?
I hope not, because it was funny.
And I'm cool with it as long as the bird wasn't being stressed just for fun.
(he/she sounded pretty stressed at some points)

(39,961 posts)That's just a cockatoo for you. Anyone that has been around parrots knows this is just fun to them. They squawk at people if they like them, know them or consider them part of the flock.
