But it looks like it is 20 mile away with the direction mostly away from us. Why do they do this?
Tornado's are isolated and don't take out 20/30 mile areas at once.

I guess better safe than sorry but I'm afraid people might start ignoring them with so many unwarranted alarms.

(37,997 posts)TV stations are obligated to warn of Tornadoes in their viewing area, not just the town in which they are located.
I thought you were speaking of physical Tornado sirens.

(15,429 posts)Doppler radar has become so accurate they can see the rotation in the clouds well in advance of a funnel cloud developing, let alone a tornado on the ground. It's purely for safety as a tornado can drop out of such rotation very quickly.
