"Does Cliven Bundy Represent The Ugly American?" From Thom Hartmann->

"Even though it’s 2014, there is still a strong Eurocentric disdain for all other cultures throughout American society."

No surprise: Bundy supporters are also Ted Nugent fans.

"According to a Denver Post analysis of attendee’s Facebook pages, they are by and large Bundy supporters and Ted Nugent fans. Their dislikes include President Obama, Harry Reid, and, I imagine, basic human decency. One would assume that most reasonable people, when told “Hey, this is actually an archaeological site that holds a great deal of importance to many people” would say “That’s cool, I can find someplace else to ride my Power Wheels.” You know, instead of harassing people and deciding to tear up the land anyway."

"Ugly American" refers to obnoxious American tourists. Bundy represents the modern day version of Archie Bunker.

"After the book had gained wide readership, the term "Ugly American" came to be used to refer to the "loud and ostentatious" type of visitor in another country, rather than the "plain looking folks, who are not afraid to 'get their hands dirty' like Homer Atkins" to whom the book itself referred."

And rather like "the pink panther," the ironic phrase was taken to mean something the authors didn't intend.

I prefer to stick with the original.
