Bill Press' PARTING SHOT

A funny thing happened at the White House yesterday: A top Obama administration official announced his support for same-sex marriage – and everybody yawned.

It happened at our daily briefing, where Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx made his first appearance before White House reporters to drum up support for the administration’s bill to get more money for the Highway Trust Fund.

Most of the questions, of course, were about transportation-related issues: How bad were our roads and highways? When would the trust fund run out of money? What if Congress did nothing? What alternatives to the gas tax was the administration looking at?

When one reporter asked an “off-the-road” question: Since a Virginia court was considering the state’s ban on same-sex marriage…And since Virginia and North Carolina were in the same federal judicial district…And since he was former mayor of Charlotte…Did he support same-sex marriage?

Foxx didn’t hesitate a moment: “Yes, I support same-sex marriage.”

And here’s the news: It wasn’t news. Two years ago, it would have made headlines. Today, nobody blinked. It’s simply taken for granted that anybody with half a brain would support marriage equality.

We’ve come a long way, baby.

That’s my parting shot for today. I’m Bill Press.

His show starts at 0500 here in the greater Chicago area, so I often don't hear most of it, but if I am up earlier than I'd like to be, he is my go to guy.
