Amy Kushnir, a co-host of the Dallas morning show The Broadcast, stomped off-set Wednesday morning amidst discussion of Michael Sam kissing his boyfriend during the NFL draft last weekend.

“When parents do not have a choice about whether or not they want their children to see this, it is wrong,” Kushnir said. “He has every right to do what he wants, I just don’t want it in my face.”

The other hosts pressed back, and almost got Kushnir to say that she didn’t want any kissing filmed or broadcast anywhere. She then amended her argument to say that ESPN was being intentionally salacious. “ESPN would not have aired any of it had he been kissing his wife,” Kushnir said (very wrong). “This was an opportunity to make news.”


Can I ask anyone here something?? The only people watching the draft on the last day in the 7th round were actual FOOTBALL FANS. I looked at the demos - not many kids watching at that time on Saturday. Oh and if 2 people are kissing, that's their business. If you don't know how to talk to your kids about it - that's your fault. Not Michael Sam's or ESPN!!

8. I didn't watch the last couple of rounds -

to be perfectly honest it got a bit boring after a while with the talking heads dissecting every pick. And I'd seen enough to know that my team had, once again, done pretty well for itself (In Ozzie Newsome we trust!), so I didn't see Sam get picked or him kissing his boyfried. But you know, during many of the earlier rounds, after the pick was read out, the cameras cut to the lucky draftee and what is he doing? Hugging and kissing his family members, significant others and friends gathered to support him. If kissing in public bothers Ms. Kushnir, why isn't she complaining about all the other kissing going on at the draft? Oh yeah, I get it - not only was it two males in a relationship rather than a male and a female, but it was a black male and a white male to boot.

Damn straight! I hate it when I'm watching My Little Pony with my daughter, and all of a sudden the TV starts showing something I don't want her to see, like a Saw marathon or the episode of Game of Thrones where the guy gets his dick chopped off. How dare TV give me no control whatsoever!

But here I am, fascinated by Michael Sam and the media coverage his coming out has garnered, from the doubled-down homophobic comments to people rethinking their own feelings on gay people to full on support for him. I feel like I'm watching something like the moon landing or the Civil Rights movement - it's so fleshed out and has only begun. He's going down in history.

19. I watched all seven rounds.

My kid watched a few rounds along with me, though she was a bit more in and out. She was at a church function after the fifth round and missed it live. I told her about how he was staying instate and she made the smart-ass teen comment about how at least someone was excited about being drafted by the Rams.


The next morning she found the footage of the kiss online and expressed her disappointment. Why? Because after everything she'd already heard she thought it was some late night Cinemax softcore porn. Her actual response to me was this:

"Mom, I've walked by worse in the halls at school. Big deal."
