I'm now getting milk delivered from a dairy farm. I know, I know, it's really expensive.
I was against the idea at first and argued vehemently against this new course in our life. I argued that it was too expensive, and that we don't drink milk that often, and that we end up dumping unused milk too often as it is.
Well, I lost that debate.. and I'm quite thrilled. The milk is amazing. We tear through those delivered glass bottles faster than they can deliver them.
Now we're even having fresh bacon, butter, and you name it delivered from the farm and it's amazing. My god, their bacon! I may even put it in my coffee.
I hope this thread doesn't tear us apart.

(14,557 posts)Have you ever been here? We are surrounded by farms and ranches and orchards and fields...and every city and town has a farmer's market.
Heck, a local strawberry farmer advertises on a wal*mart commercial.

(22,271 posts)One of our local dairies (Rosa Brothers) uses glass bottles and the taste is amazing. Afaik they don't sell butter in the stores (yet) but they do sell ice cream. I pay through the nose for it but I don't care. I'm big into the Buy Local movement and I try to put my money where my beliefs are. This is a locally-owned, family-owned and run dairy that's been in business for 60+ years.

(89,247 posts)but i can't think of when i tried it in glass.
You don't notice it until you get the milk in the bottles. They stay colder in the bottles and don't absorb the taste of the plastic/paper containers. The first time we tried it we immediately noticed the difference. If you're ever at California's Central Coast or the San Joaquin Valley you can find the Rosa Brothers brand of milk. I'm not sure where the OP is getting his/hers.

(22,271 posts)MUCH larger and been in business for as long as I can remember and they've had Republican fundraisers. I won't buy their milk. The guys I deal with are a family farm and, as far as I know, are not publically politically active.

(23,720 posts)Strawberry and chocolate get their own shelves in the store. Hell, white milk has to share a shelf with that 2% and skim crap.

(22,845 posts)Back in the late 1950s and early 1960s, everyone in our neighborhood had an insulated metal milk box on the front steps. On hot summer days, the milkman left a big chunk of ice to keep the milk cool until it could be brought indoors.

(113,275 posts)yourself in that situation again, herewith a couple of suggestions: freeze the milk in ice cube trays, then place in freezer bag when solid. add a drop of vanilla if putting in your coffee, etc. keep the soured milk, and use it for baking, for pancakes, for mashed potatoes. really let it go sour for sour cream, or cottage cheese. throwing milk away--shudder!!
we have a local dairy here, the milk is incredible, and the products actually less expensive than the supermarkets. milk in glass bottles from local farms. . yummm.
