$60 million Texas High School Football Stadium to close, deemed 'not safe'

ALLEN — Allen ISD officials said Monday that design flaws appear to have contributed to problems with cracking of concrete at the district’s new $60 million stadium, prompting them to close the stadium for the next football season.

Previously, PBK Architects, which designed the stadium, said the problems in the concourse level were probably caused by shrinkage in the concrete.

But an analysis commissioned by the district shows engineers have found design deficiencies at the concourse level, according to documents released to The Dallas Morning News.

Partial findings by Nelson Forensics indicate that some support structures were not designed in a way that would hold the weight anticipated on that level of the stadium.

“The stadium is not safe for public assembly,” Superintendent Lance Hindt said.

As for the second link... ALEC? Really? Even if the info is correct, the source is so poisonous that it necessarily calls the info into question.

I confess that this is the answer I was expecting.

Funny how aggressively-funded schools with gatekeeper admission policies tend to produce better results...

Allen is an expensive suburb of Dallas, and their schools are well funded. High school football is the official state religion of Texas. In 2009 the voters decided to construct a football stadium that would make pro teams jealous, and agreed to having their property taxes raised to pay for it.

I think it's going to come down to one thing: the engineering firm that designed this place didn't factor in 60,000 football-crazed people creating intense, structure-destroying harmonic vibrations through intense, hour-long in-unison foot-stomping sessions five times a year, every year, until someone in the Allen Independent School District decides there's a little bit fancier stadium with only about 20,000 more seats than theirs about 45 miles away, in the city of Arlington, and they can't be shown up like that, now can they?

At a HIGH SCHOOL! I've seen university stadiums that were smaller than that.

But the truly insane thing is that, while this stadium seats 18,000 people, it's only the fifth largest high school stadium in Texas. Which means that four are even bigger!
