I wonder if homo sapiens could separate into two such distinct species in that span of time?

(10,624 posts)That's 800,000 years.
40,000 years ago, my ancestors were lean long-distance runners from Africa with brown skin and (probably) tightly curled black hair.
Now, I'm considered a completely different race from people who look like that. My skin is pale white, my hair is lighter and straighter, my eyes are a lighter shade, and my body is shorter and thicker.
10,000 years ago, there were white people who looked just like me. But evolutionary changes resulting from the adoption of an agricultural diet have rendered me dramatically different from them in lots of ways that don't show on the surface.
10,000 years ago, no one had blue eyes. That is a recent mutation.
Imagine how different two groups of people could become if they lived in isolation from each other for 800,000 years.
