Americans Don't Want To Pay Taxes To Take Care Of Vets. Good On Rhetoric But Empty On Action.

The real truth about vets care is that Americans really don't want to pay taxes that would take care of vets. America has always been good on rhetoric but poor on action when it comes to vets care. Except for the WWII vets vets of other wars have gone wanting. As a Vietnam vet I witnessed a reluctance to take care of Vietnam vets. In our youth we were pretty much reviled and most Vietnam vets had to sort it out for themselves.

Even in employment vets were not particularly favored when they came back. Many vets ended up working for government. And disabled vets in particular were able to work in government because they were not discriminated against in the labor market. the real truth is that business does not care ONE lick about vets. And the most recent vets are most likely considered taboo because of all the problems some of them face.

During the Vietnam era there were programs that tried to help vets. And there was veteran's preference in hiring in government and vets were given first look at jobs listed with the National Job Service that Reagan and the GOP eventually dismantled and turned over to the counties. There were even vets units in the National Job Service to serve veterans.

Today there really are no national programs to serve these new vets. There is only lip service and pleading for business to hire vets. And where vets do work for government or employers like the Post Office the GOP and its allies are trying to lay all these guys off and even take their earned pensions.

In the GOP no taxes environment and anti government era, the public does not want to pay any taxes. No taxes even if it is to take care of vets. And corporations pay very few taxes that would help those soldiers who protect their interests in the end.

The Dems are too meek to come out and paint the GOP as the enemy of veterans and anyone else who needs government. The VA scandal is more about lack of funding and resources as much as anything. And the GOP would rather give vets cheap vouchers than actually care for them. They are content to let the families bear the burden of vets care. After all it is the patriotic thing to do and not bother the government with their ills. Or even better yet let the churches and charities take care of our vets.

How sick all of it really is. Think twice before you serve because if you get hurt or sick you are on your own. Lift yourself up by your own bootstraps. Take personal responsibility for the injuries you got for getting in the way of the bullet or IED.

I understand that we could divert some money, theoretically, but the real issue is that Congress (the people) won't fund the VA adequately.

the military budget is more than half - yet somehow they don't fall under the military budget - that's bullshit
this should have been sorted out well before this useless congress - not giving them the chance to use the veterans as political pawns

THEY should be paying MORE (well, the should be paying taxes in the first place) taxes to account for the damage done to the lives and bodies of citizens who went to protect their interests.
